Feeler: Smooth STEEL cowl panels
Before I become a vendor and start making these for sale on here, trying to get a feel for what you guys think a fair price is. I have checked into current pricing by companies and individuals and the going rate is around 600.00 plus shipping. I WILL sell them for less than 600 but I am wanting to know what you guys think is reasonable for a smoothed steel cowl panel. I will give the option with or without wipers. If someone wanted custom cutouts done to still allow some airflow, that would be a possibility as well. I can offer them primered ready to paint (with quaility automotive primer) or just welded and ground smooth. I plan on supplying the cowls as part of the price. Shipping will be included in the price to the CONUS. Here are some pictures for reference (NOT MINE). I just picked up the clean steel sheet and hopefully will have mine done in a week or two for a sample of the true end product.

Re: Feeler: Smooth STEEL cowl panels
That's why I'm asking for input. If you want one now, you have to pay 600 plus shipping
I'm wanting to give a deal while still not giving it away and being unfair to the other vendors offering the product.

Re: Feeler: Smooth STEEL cowl panels
And I know there is the fiberglass cowl out there for around $300 I believe? But I'd prefer steel over fiberglass personally.

Re: Feeler: Smooth STEEL cowl panels
What I can say is I'd be interested, but what I can't say is how much you should try and get. I know you had said you would provide the cowl, but had you thought about doing it with a core type system? I mean I have 9 or 10 cowls and I couldn't see not using one of those or trading one for a smoothed one. Just food for thought.
Bottom line though, is I'd be interested. Chad |

Re: Feeler: Smooth STEEL cowl panels
Honestly, I have four cowl panels right now with a few more I'm picking up soon and haven't spent much on them....got them with parts lots, parting, free, etc...So I can't see it being affordable to ship me one. But, It might work for you to ship me several and I take that amount off your total

Re: Feeler: Smooth STEEL cowl panels
The most I would want to pay is around $500 shipped. Still alot of coin, but I think people will pay for quality work.

Bumping this to gauge interest. Please post if you're interested in one around the 400-500 Shipped price.

Re: Feeler: Smooth STEEL cowl panels
Yes, but I could have got my metal one done for close to
the same. I was worried about it getting warped since I'm near nowhere and do not have many customizers around.

Re: Feeler: Smooth STEEL cowl panels
Did anyone quote you? The only ones on here who have posted about doing these said it wouldn't be worth their time to do them for less than 600 plus shipping which is where I got my initial info on pricing. Plus the one vendor I know that makes them sells them for 600 plus shipping.

Re: Feeler: Smooth STEEL cowl panels
I figure offering a metal cowl for only100-200 more than fiberglass would be worth it for strength and finishing; and offering it for a 100-200 less than what's currently available would be more than fair. But that's what this post is for, is to gauge interest and viability of the product. I know there is a limited market for these because of cost and functionality concerns. Just hoping to offer a deal to those on this site while funding my project with any profits. It's pretty labor intensive so to end up making $20/hr on these might even be a stretch to put it in perspective. Shipping will be fairly high because of the size and boxing I will have to come up with to safely ship them so the actual product would be in the 300-400 range plus packaging and shipping costs.

Re: Feeler: Smooth STEEL cowl panels
Yes, I was quoted around $250 I think, but like I said nobody
around here does customizing and it could have looked bad. I know 5150 had his done for very cheap and it looks perfect.

Re: Feeler: Smooth STEEL cowl panels
if you want a good guess i would suggest talking with member "rockrln", he is a very good metal guy & i feel he has a good head on his shoulders about labor price & work related to that....
just a suggestion. as far as a price on my end that is reasonable i would guess maybe around $300-$600 with shipping......0.02 good luck! |

I would be interested as well, but I can't see paying more than 400 for it.

Re: Feeler: Smooth STEEL cowl panels
Backtrack, i did not read the whole thread before i posted.
After reading what you already found out. I don't think most guys would pay that much for a cowl. I wouldn't. Quote:
I know i would never pay $600 for one. I could build one tons cheaper. So i am a little confused..... Are you going to build them or buy them? Unfair to other vendors? If you are stamping them yourself and planning on selling them to vendors you need to be comparable to their prices. However if you are going to be the only seller of them then who gives a crap about the other vendors?? You have to figure out what they will cost you to make. Then make your markup after that. You can't expect the consumer(us) to tell you what to price them at. Wal-Mart never asks me what i want to pay.

Re: Feeler: Smooth STEEL cowl panels
I'm not planning to sell them at 600 plus shipping because that was my reaction when I heard about them. I'm going to make them and sell them for a couple hundred less than someone can buy one for now. That's the plan...now gotta get to work

Re: Feeler: Smooth STEEL cowl panels
Why do you assume someone will pay more for metal over fiberglass? And you say there is an advantage of metal over fiberglass ... how so? I mean in my mind this piece of sheetmetal functions only as a cover anyway.

Re: Feeler: Smooth STEEL cowl panels
I think metal is much better unless you are racing and need to lose the extra weight.
I think $450-475 shipped is where you need to start out. When the economy gets better you can charge a bit more and still stay under the big guys. You can ship a cowl for $35-42 anywhere in the continental US...not too bad.
