Question for all of you

71 with 305 TPI, 700-R4, HEI with internal alternator showing 14 volts on gauge. While heading for a local cruise in today very hot 96 Degree's F I was running A/C radio, garmin, had the cell pluged in also. When I came to a stop sign or light it would die on me. It would crank right up though.
I turned the A/C off for the last couple of miles to the meet and it was fine.
Checked the battery when I got home it was fine. I load tested it. You think I need to set the timing up a little more. It's running 7000 at idle without the air on. With it on it drops to 5000. Sounds low to me. The truck runs good though no hesitation at all.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: Question for all of you

theres a million things on that engine that'll make it stall, and if it cranks right back up, then you can rule out the battery/charging system.
Did you hook up the check engine light? are there any codes?

Re: Question for all of you

7000 rpm sounds a little high. Just kidding with you. Do you have a idle up solenoid on your tbi? This is the solenoid that bumps your idle up when you turn on the A/C.

Re: Question for all of you

Yes it has the idle air senor and it has a check engine light. Didn't check the codes but will today.

Re: Question for all of you

longhorn man is right, But I might suggest just for the heck of it to remove the IAC, and clean the tip of it and the seat inside of the throttle body. I think I read that you drive your truck alot. Might just be a junk of carbon not letting the IAC do its job. Here is an Idle setting procedure from the general. If you have a wiring scematic, you can power the IAC to the fully extended position at the connector. this will shut off any bypass air that allows a fuel injected engine to idle ( metered vacuum leak ) once this is done, adjust the idle speed normally to about 500 rpm, and once restarted the ecm should compensate for changes in engine load at keep it about 700.

Idle speed is speed is controlled by the ECM through the Idle Speed Control motor and is not adjustable. The minimum air rate is adjustable as follows.

1. Ground diagnostic terminal, turn ignition to on position.
2. Wait 45 seconds for IAC to fully seat, then with ignition still on disconnect IAC connector.
3. Remove ground from diagnostic terminal and start engine.
4. Adjust idle speed to specifications.
5. Turn ignition off and reconnect IAC connector.
6. Check TPS voltage, then start engine and check idle speed.

Re: Question for all of you

I can't remember if you have a K&N filter or not, but if so, the sensor mentioned above can get covered with oil and not be able to read the incoming air properly, causing problems like this.

Re: Question for all of you

Pulled the IAC motor out and pulled the TPI throttle body off and cleaned it real good this morning. The IAC had carbon all over it. Inside had it too! Cleaned it up with brake cleaner and everything is running fine again thanks. It had been so long since I had any problems I had to get my brain in gear.
Yes I have the K&N filter also. Good point on the oil.
