Really it's not to hard to build the floor from white pine or oak if you're really want to add to the overall costs. You'll need a tablesaw, planer, (a jointer will help but not necessary) and a router with the appropriate bits. I'd use white pine until you get the technique then switch to the wood of choice.

Visit a car show or two and talk to the guys with wooden beds. Most will help you with the dimensions.

I built a bed floor for a 68 out of cypress...but unfortunately lost the photos/notes in an event called Katrina.

Besides saving the cost of a bed kit, you'll have a need to buy tools.
