holly carberator OPEN ME UP AND READ ME

this sounds stupid but i didnt know the answer....

while back i was workin for an old farmer down the road and saw a holly carberator box...well didnt say nothin bout it till a few months later (today) i stopped back and asked if he'd sell it...(was settin on a shelf in a barn...he THINKS it came off of a ?427 ford motor? i gotta couple numbers but dunno the number on the carb or the cfm..i wanna know if it'll fit my truck or not and if its too much or not enough lol...and is holly a good carb? running Q-Jet now and had a freshly rebuild edelbrock that give me nothin but trouble....i can get it for almosst nothing...so would it be any better than my q jet? oh and its a 4 barrel carb....still has all the orig. paperwork....it looks fairly new its just kinda dirty from dirt dobber nests......and what're some bolt on go a lil faster performace goodies...im just getting into this kinda stuff so bear with me lol

i run a holley 650 on my 70 and i love it, what motor are you wanting to use it on? also, take a few pictures and post em up. the top, both sides and bottom. this will make it easier to id.

it'll go on a bone stock 350 im lookin for more power!!!

but if its off a ford will it go on my sbc and will it gime for power than my q jet?

99.9 percent of all Holley carbs are square bore mounting pattern. You will need to make sure your intake will accommodate or run one of those hokey adapters.

I have always told those who asked my advise, run a holley if you want to tune and tweak your carb or race. run a edelbrock if you want to ride and forget about your carb. I am sorry that you had bad luck with the Edelbrock they are great carbs. The holley is as well I just feel it does'nt hold hold a tune as well. I know this might start a firestorm, I have run holleys sizes from 390 cfm to 1050 cfm And edelbrocks and carters from 500 cfm to 750 cfm. Jim

i have a hokey adapter from my edelbrock carb..reckon thats the same carb?

well i dont mind tuning it just not every week.....so ya think the holly is the better carb. if u dont mind spenind time tuning it..

so if its offa a ford will it fit my chevy

I completely agree with Jim. I have run them all, lots of all of them, and I find the Carter/ Edelbrock carbs to be the most care free never mess with them carbs made. Holley's are fine, but I just have always had a fraction of the headaches from the Edelbrocks.

i think a holley 600 cfm or a 650 would be good, depending on the price it might be worth buying it, rebuilding it and reselling it, who knows you may end up with another project in need of a carb

owners manual said

P/N 0-80508s, 0-80783c electric choke

P/N 0-3310s, &0-33110C manual choke

edit i gota couple more numbers too if those numbers aint nothin special..what i dont get is every side of the box there was a pic of a diff carb. and a diff model number..so i couldnt figure out which model number the carb in the box was lol it had pix of 2 bbl and 4 bbl this carb is 4bbl for sure i saw that part

You wont get any more power putting on a different carb. It can't make your engine pull any more air in to make it simple. Plus you quad is 750 cfm. A VERY hot 350 won't pull near that much air. And the Holley will be tuned wrong unless you jet it yourself.

No firestorm here but not only do I disagree with Hugger, I'm running 2 of the crazy things and I DO NOT have to touch them!!!!!

Here is part of the problem: Just like a motor, a successful rebuild has to start with a good core. If you rebuild a Holley that has tons of crap in the fuel bowls, sometimes known as varnish, you have that in your metering blocks too. The problem is that you can get your bowls clean but it can be very hard to get that stuff out of the metering wells. Now each time you start and stop your ride, all that crap is kinda moving/floating around in there. Sometimes sticking on an air bleed...sometimes not. The biggest problem with Holleys is that there is actually too many tuning features. Why that is what the pros like, it can be a nightmare to a novice.

When it comes to the new ones, Holley has to build a carb for the masses, playing a numbers game so they set them up "close". When you're dealing with a modified motor, it is very important to get a carb setup right with proper idle feed restrictors, a power valve to correctly match the engines Hg vacuum and proper jetting. The other thing is to correctly buy the proper Holley in the first place to match your engine's basic cfm needs.

B-try to get the edelbrock from putin gas in my oil and run int (i just rebuilt it, floats are to spec)

C-get the holly

D-get one of the above buy the holly for resale

i would say d. if you decide to build the motor up, and it is a holley 750, then you will save a few bucks. and you could use that money for an intake or a ignition system or to take the lady out for a night.

I'll take all the qjets you can throw! I really think I'll be in the 13's this fall, and I'm getting about 13-14 MPG on 70+ MPH highway trips. For newbies, it takes a lot of patience, but once you have it all figured out it isn't rocket science. Not to mention, when you open up the 4 barrel on a Qjet, it has a very sweet sound. Kinda like opening up the doors in Star Trek.

Or just have Smi ( Sean Murphy induction) either rebuild and jet your carb that you send in for 180$, or get one from them jetted to your specs for 320$. They do Holleys as well. Jetting can be pretty complicated. I love my Q-jet. Baby primaries for torque and mileage along with the black hole secondaries. I get good mileage withmy q-jet too...

It won't be worth much used. If I were you, I would quit screwing around with different carbs. Pick one and tune it. The Edelbrock will be the easiest to put jets in and out of.

i like the edelbrock..shiny...i just spend 40 bucks on a rebuild kit and rebuilt it...but im scared to put the dang thing on...2 times its put gas in my oil!!! i cant have that!!!! so i just put my q jet back on.......

floats are justed to 7/16 choke may be a lil off still but pretty close to spec..unless the a/f is off still....hey whats the best way to adjust that anyway...just mess with it till ya get it how ya want?

Do you mean the oil smells like gas after you shut it off? That's pretty normal with a carb, especially with a q-jet. They leak fuel down into the cylinders after shut off. If there's ALOT of fuel in the oil that means it's likely too rich. Nothing to do with the type of carb

but no it was putting lots of gas in the oil...ah here in a few days i may play with it..go back and recheck/readjust everything to spec and buy an oil filter/oil just in case lol.....can i adjust it by turning the a/f screws correct?

Yeah.....that sweet sound called a lean condition!

Believe me....there is a place for Q-jets. This is what 55 look like in the back of my Toyota Sequoia. Bought all 55 for $150! That's $2.90 a carb. When I was done selling them on eBay I had netted just over $4,000 in profit!




I really do know they are a good carb when setup right. I just have a small Holley business and can't give the competition any props!!!
