Power Steering Question

I have a 67 C10 and power steering was installed by th PO. The steering box is leaking fluid from the top so I assume the seal is done. Are these seals still available or do I have to replace the whole box? I was told not to drive it because I could burn out the pump but the resevoir is full, its only leaking out of the steering box. Is it possible to unhook the belt for now so I could still drive it with manual steering or should I just leave it parked until I fix the problem? Thanks

Changing the steering gear is easy, and the seals are available, are you sure it is not one of the hoses?

No, its not the hoses. Its leaking from the top where the steering wheel shaft enters the box. Unless there are hoses inside the box?

Is there any difference between a 2wd and 4wd power steering gear box? LMC lists them separate but they look exactly the same. And were the gear boxes the same from 73-87?

Napa has seal kits for steering boxes. 2wd and 4wd boxes are different. &3 -87 boxes changed to metric fittings somewhere around 1981, otherwise the same except tha ratio might be different.

I wouldn't be afraid to drive it unless the fluid is pouring out of it. Just check the fluid level often. A friend of mine has a 91 S-10 blazer that the power steering was leaking on. He bought a bottle of Lucas power steering stop leak and it cured his problem. Your mileage may vary but at 9 bucks it might be worth a try... If you try it let us know what the outcome is.

The container on the pump is full, it steers fine when I am going at a good speed but when I slow down sometimes it gets really hard or stops completely. I think its sucking air. Could it be a loose belt? I will try the Lucas stop leak tomorrow and I will tighten the belt to see what happens. I will let you know how I make out tomorrow night. Thanks

So I swapped out the power steering belt and it is 100% now, picked up the Lucas power steering stop leak and I am just waiting for the fluid to go down a bit. Its maybe leaking a table spoon a day. Gonna see what happens I guess.

Go to the dollar store and get a Turkey Baster. Then you can suck enough fluid out to add the stop leak.
