Why does my motor sit back so far?

Im not sure why but my motor is really far back all my friends who have a 67-72 there motor isnt as far back as mine
I don't know if you can tell but my distributor is against the firewall
I don't know if the PO made new holes and moved it back but I don't know why he would do that he did alot of stuff that I can't explain and doesn't make any sense.

Some one may have put it in the 6cyl position

Motor being in the back position shouldn't cause a vibration unless something is loose or the motor mounts are bad.

Motor placement will not cause a vibration. That is the stock motor placement for the 4x4. They were set back a little to give them more clearance between the oil pan and front differential. I realize you have a 2wd, just pointing out that the 4wd's had it set there, so you know that it's not horrible that yours is set back.

Ok thanks alot guys just trying to narrow down the vibration so far i've got it pretty much narrowed down that the PO just slapped the motor together and didn't balance it

i think if you had the correct fan clutch and radiator shroud on your truck it would b sitting just about right

The number 9 spark plug isn't hooked up ! Seriously, do you have drum brakes and different than stock wheels? I would check the lug nuts on the front and let me know.

Nothing wrong with the engine being in the back position , in fact its more desirable for transforing power to the rear wheels.

kevin... good eye! nothing like a rubber line over a hot header huh? I think I'd be getting rid of the spark plug heater block off hose and that flex fan too myself.

I LOL'd at that one, good catch!! That fire would be a BAD one. The header will melt the hose until it springs a leak. At this point gas is shooting onto the engine, but the engine is probably still running because the hose isn't melted in two. At some point the fire starts, and the gas keeps on shooting onto it. Scary stuff!!! By the time you pull over, shut the engine down, and take a look, it's all over with for that poor truck.



PS - do you plan to run a heater? If not you can get a fitting to go right into your intake manifold to replace the spark plug plug (spark plug plug??) contraption that you have. Although to be honest, I think the spark plug plug (I like typing spark plug plug) is rather neat. Not every day you see that!

Edit - I need to read better. I see LHM already commented on the spark plug. Oh well, to add my two cents, I think the spark plug is a neat solution to the heater problem.

And sometimes by the time the wiring is cooked, killing the ignition won't stop the starter from turning over, therefore even with the engine dead the fuel pump is still just running along. Ask me how I know. Not rubber fuel lines though...

Personaly ide ditch the no longer flexable bent flex fan , the duct tape wire looms, the hose clamp throttle return spring and unless thats the cleanest intake instal ive ever seen ide replace those rubber front and back gaskets with silicon. Looks like your missing a intake bolt aswell, maybe take a bit more time to really.....make it road worthy as others have spoken about with the fire its just not worth being that in a hurry to drive it.

I think Kevin actually meant "car-b-que".
And that flex fan is really a neat way to ventilate your hood, I'd ditch it, along with the rubber fuel line by the exhaust, as others have noted.

As many of our faithful have pointed out out the corners that have been cut, have the motor mount bolts been torqued properly? That would definately cause a vibration.

Yes that is a very old picture and i have fixed all that stuff all of that is from the PO and i've already done everything trying to figure out the vibration bent fan, flex plate, torque converter, motor mounts all that stuff i had a thread a while back and what it is left to is that it has a 400 crank and a 350 flex plate and whatever else it needs or its just not balanced

and the vibration is in the motor not anything behind it because it does it in neutral and while driving from about 2300-4000 rpms and in some differant spots like at just 1000 rpms and a little after 3000

Might want to check the drive shaft length. If the motor was set back and the drive shaft length not addressed then it will go too far into the tailshaft. It will eventually destroy the back end of the trans and cause vibration along the way.

My post came out right after you said vibration was while not moving. OOOPS

Flexplate definately needs to be checked since one crank is internal balance and one is external. Might check harmonic balancer/dampner too.

if it in fact has a 350 flex plate and a 400 crank ( a gm factory one) then I would swap that sucker out ASAP.
glad to hear you repaired all that stuff though. Engine fires at 70 MPH in the middle of nowhere are no fun at all.
