painted over SPID....help!

I recently bought a 1968 Chevy LWB Custom from my father in-law and it seems the PO he Bought it from painted over the SPID. I would like to know some history about this truck like : Original paint color combo ( truck was striped and painted a different color ) , original engine ( it has a mid to late 80's 4 bolt 350 in it now ) , what interior combo , it has no interior now , well it has 71-72 door panels , green sun visors , blue set of 67-68 metal door panels where in the bed , red dash and red (majority is red ) , green , white and blue cab interior , black dash pad , no seats , black seat belts. On the exterior it has Custom/30 doors and fenders ( father -in-law installed ), holes for upper and lower trim , studs for trim around the cab ( just below the rear window) , ss trim around the windows ( I have only 1 piece for each window ) , 6 bolt rally wheels , drums all around , it only has power steering , and original cab clearance lights.

Is there anyway I can remove the paint from the SPID to see whats on it , maybe even a glimpse. I would like to get all the codes and info to replace the SPID with a new one.

Try some lacquer thinner to see if you can remove the paint. Your best bet might be to find the build sheet that should still be in either the back of the seat or bottom of the seat or both. It will take about 4 sets of hands to get the build sheet out without tearing it to pieces...don't even try. It will have all of you options on it.

Oooops...just reread your post....NO SEAT!!!!! VIN will tell you some things like I-6 or V-8, 2wd or 4x4, lwb or swb but that is about all.

So far all I have is C : Conventional cab , E : V-8 Gasoline , 1 : 1/2 Ton , 4 : Pick-up , 8 : 1968 , T : Tarrytown (Sleepy Hollow N.Y.)

i wouldnt use lacquer thinner it will take the words off the paper... id use wax and grease remover... sold at local part store

I have used starting fluid, weird I know. It doesn't remove the paint but somehow the codes bleed through while the starting fluid is wet. Grab a pencil and paper, it evaporates quickly.

If your door has the plastic cover over the label either lacquer thinner or starting fluid would work fine to remove the paint. If it doesn't have the plastic cover, you probably won't have much luck reading it unless the previous suggestion works. Most of the 68 labels I have seen didn't have the plastic cover though.

This can be reproduced to look like the original? I didn't know that.

Start taking body panels apart lol chances are some original color is still behind a blind spot that didn't get the new paint color. That's how my truck is with the cowl panel off.

Will try everything everyone suggested thanks. Did custom C-10's come with a limited slip or was that a separate option ?
