Control arm removal (torsion style)
So I'm in the process of doing the front cross member swap and I had a quick question about removing the control arms. I want to remove the whole thing in 3 managable pieces ( left upper and lower control arms and spindle/ same with the right side and then the middle piece). I was just curious how to take all the load off of the torsion bars so I can unbolt the upper/lower/spindle assembly in one piece. Thanks for the help.

Re: Control arm removal (torsion style)
Per the 1960 Chevy shop manual:
1. Remove upper control arm bumper from control arm and disconnect shock absorber. 2. Raise vehicle and support frame so control arms are at full rebound position. 3. Back off adjusting bolt to unwind torsion bar until bolt and lower spacer can be splipped out of anchor arm, then pull anchor arm rearward off arm. On my truck the arms didn't "slip off", and fact the never came off. After I pulled the entire suspension I tried removing the arms and the torsion bars and everything had grown into one piece. Not even a five pound sledge could budge them. I found it easier to remove the whole assembly in one piece, I just lowered it down with a floor jack and pulled out the whole thing at once. It's pretty manageable. You also might find the following link helpful: http://sixty7ss.proboards.com/index....lay&thread=633 |
