picked up 1972 4X4 shorty...made it home

I need your input guys. I'm flying out to Santa Rosa, CA. to pick up and drive home, 1800 miles, my sons new ride. The truck has not been on the road for some time. I'm packin' tools and plan on servicing the truck before I go. The front trans seal is leaking. What would you bring along on such a "trip", besides some ATF

I`ve driven several trucks back east rom out of southern California.You just gotta have faith and carry all fluids and simple tools.if all is in good working order and fluids are up another couple thousand miles should be no problem.When you stop check it over good,feel for heat in the hibs and look for leaking fluids.A full set of sockets,jack(see if one is with truck),hammer,screw drivers,pry bar...
Check over all hoses and belts before leaving.

Good luck.It`s alot of fun and you should be fine.

All good things to carry. When I go a long ways (1000 miles to Wyoming one way many times) I carry extra belts and hoses, two pre-mixed gallon jugs of anti-freeze (save the jugs if you use them because you can always re-fill with water in a pinch), a rail of combinations wrenches, a rail of sockets, extender for socket wrench, a GOOD spare tire, a couple quarts of motor oil and a couple of quarts of tranny fluid.

Make sure your jack will work with a flat. In other words a bottle jack that works with a full tire may not get under the frame when the tire is flat. A floor jack is a great thing to have in the bed when you blow a tire on the road.

Thanks all ! good info from everyone. The truck is an original (it's been lifted) 72 4X4 with 114,000 miles on it.............no rust, ever.
My Dad bought a new one (1972 4X4 350/350 shorty) from Jackson Motors in Calif. when I was a teen. Been looking for a long time, good memories from Dads truck.

Regular old glass fuses. Be sure the axles are full of clean lube and that the axle seals aren't wet. With bigger tires that thing is going to want to push gear oil out of it and if it does you'll fry the ring gear. I'd drive it to a Jiffy Lube or the sort and have the oil changed, diffs drained and refilled, and I'd drain the radiator and put new hoses on it now and refill with new antifreeze. No sense in taking a chance, change them now when it is convenient as opposed to allong side the freeway at 3AM in a pouring rain!! Keep the old hoses and belts with you as spares just in case!! Good luck and enjoy the drive!! Carry lots of water for the truck and you, it is going to be HOT AS HELLFIRE running across I-10 which is the way i am guessing you'll go!! Travel at night if you can at least across death valley and Southern AZ.

Honestly, I'd buy a new Edelbrock 600cfm carb and hassle with the stocker when you get it home. $250 new and it should be a near bolt on affair (You mmay need an adapter if it is a Q-jet spreadbore intake)>

Nope and an edelbrock will bolt right on there. Since it is a Carter (same as edelbrock) they are faily easy to rebuild, but not something you want to do before you drive it home. Maybe have the seller pull it and have it rebuilt before you get there? Change the fuel filters and I'd do a fuel pump or at the very least bring one with ya, they are $20 and easy to swap out. That way your sure the fuel system is right and working.

This is exactly what I would do just after purchasing the rig.

Get all the fluids changed, and the cooling system flushed at some full service place.

Being that the tires are bigger ones, does it have a spare that will work enough to get you to a service station? If not, then I am a firm believer in carrying a couple cans of fix-a-flat. That stuff has saved my bacon a few times on the side of the road and out in the boonies, it beats having to change a tire in a place that could be hazardous.

Awesome truck though! Conrats and have fun on your drive home. (Drink lots of water, since it's averaging tripple digits here in the west).
