Who has a Dashpad cover?

How do it fit, or is it worth it to get a new dash pad.

Re: Who has a Dashpad cover?

I have one covering the cracked up dash in my sub. Fits really well. Uses some double sided velco to make sure that it doesn't slide all over. Looks good enough to leave for me so I won't be replacing the dash any-time soon

Re: Who has a Dashpad cover?

from all the talking ive done with these guys it seems the guys who are restoring for show purposes will tell you the dash covers stink and dont fit well. the guys running these trucks as daily drivers will usually give them favorable ratings.. I saw one that the thing looked horrible yet others have looked ok.. Id check withour site vendors as they tend to sell higher quality items than the catalogue vendors

Re: Who has a Dashpad cover?

Yo! vsoree!
Wasn't gonna post here because I have a terrible bias against the dash caps. I have spent the money to purchase a new dashpad in several of my vehicles and I'm very pleased with my decision.
The old dash material was prone to warp and splitting due to heat. You'll not change that by cutting, rasping, filling, and capping. I strongly suspect that the cap will lift eventually, when the underlying material warps with heat.
The materials that my new dashpads are made of is a urethane that does not warp or crack with heat. That's what sold me. My '76 Camaros' has been in place for four years, daily driven, and parked in the sun five days a week, sometimes more than that. Temps inside reach the usual, as I have no tint on my windows, nor do I cover my windshield. No fade, no warp, no crack, it's just like new. As is my '68 and '66 Mustangs' and FRANKENTRUCKs'. Color is solid all the way through, and I've had good luck with fit, although I've heard some complain about it. Careful installation is important.
Cost is a major consideration, though. New dashpads are expensive but will last. I expect caps to be temporary fixes, but are cheap. Think about what you expect from your vehicle, check prices (WITH shipping!), and you'll be able to make an informed decision.
One other option,...dammitmitchell has used plastic epoxy to repair his, check out the last pages of his build thread. He feels it worked very well and cost him near nothing.
Todd.
P.S. I can easily provide pics of my '68 Mustangs', '76 Camaros', and '78 FRANKENTRUCKs' dashpads if you'd like,...sold the '66 but it's dashpad remains as new, also.

Re: Who has a Dashpad cover?

I agree with both earlier posts. I would love to replace my dash but money is tight and the car had the carpet cover when I got it.

I actually think I would buy one even if the dash weren't cracked. It durable and its a non-slip surface. I always put my phone and stuff up there and it doesn't look or fit poorly either.

For a driver on a budget I would run one...

Re: Who has a Dashpad cover?

Yo! 83burban is correct! I cover even my new dashpads with carpet covers just to protect them, and mine look and fit great. I've been driving for years without securing any of mine (I'd hate to do that to a new dashpad!),...no problems.
Easy to post pics of those too,...Mustang, Camaro, or FRANKENTRUCKs'.
Todd.

Re: Who has a Dashpad cover?

Re: Who has a Dashpad cover?

I have one and I have no complaints with it. I was told be the guy who does my interior stuff not to glue every inch of it down as it will expand and contract at a different rate than the factory pad.

Re: Who has a Dashpad cover?

Just got a dash pad off a 84 in the salvage yard. No cracks. Check out the local salvage yard with that cash for clunker crap you have a good chance on picking up a OE part for cheap.

Much better color selection on a dash cap for a few extra bucks, AND support a board member too!
Todd.
