air dam / spoiler
Anybody buy or make a front airdam that looks good on these trucks? I read an article somewhere that suggested that a fairly deep airdam would improve mileage on the highway. These old trucks are plenty rough underneath and if you can divert the air around them instead of letting it go underneath, it will improve the drag numbers and the fuel mileage.
When you mess with older vehicles the modifications sometimes look out of place so I wondered if anyone has something that looks good.

Got the one in the ebay action. Looks pretty good. See my Web shots folder under "Air Dam Install"
http://community.webshots.com/user/frazel It seems to have reduced the wind noise and improved high speed stability. Hangs down about 4 inches below bumper. Was worth the 45 dollars delivered.

The actual intended purpose of the black plastic air dam is to help with cooling. The re-direction of the air creates a low pressure area behind the radiator, which helps draw air through the radiator.
You would need chin spoiler that was really close to the ground to actually reduce the turbulence underneath the truck and improve fuel milage. You are actually increasing the frontal area as well, so any CD improvment would be minimal.

Yea your probably right.......but I swear the wind noise/howling was reduced. The truck seems much quieter going down the road at 70mph. The picture was taken with the truck on an incline. On level ground the air dam is closer to the pavement.

Buy a 81-87 chevy 2wd or 4wd air dam. You drill or clamp the air dam to the frame and run screws in the bottom of each fender. 15 min installation and it only costs roughly $15.

Air dam
This is what I installed. It is very simple and it looks right I think for the truck. You order it for a 80's model 2 wheel drive truck, because the 4 wheel dams have the cut outs for the tow hooks. I don't now about any #'s on fuel or cooling but it looks better.

I wanna try this too, my dad has an 87 4x4, its air dam is about 5 inches tall, i want to try to install that and maybe put some ducting in it for a cold air induction set up.
