Re: 69 c10 -- first project!!

started getting ready for the frame shortening, took the rear cab mounts off, front bed mounts and cut the 8" off the back of the frame, aswell as removed the tranny crossmember and the brake lines and wiring.

my compressor kept dying on me and we had little more option. so we just cut the 8" off with a hacksaw haha. turned out as good.

also opened the diff up to see what ratio and if i had posi or not. well it looks like a brand new set of 3.73's in it but no posi, oh well, locker on order!! could anyone tell me what spline axles came stock on these? having to pull an axle to check?

Re: 69 c10 -- first project!!

well im going to shorten the frame, and you have to take 8" off the back end and 12" out of the middle, so i took the end piece off first. i have to take the frame to my buddy's cuz i dont have a welder or 220 to weld it back up.

plans for the truck are a supercharged ls motor, 4l80e trans with manual valve body, 12bolt rear just gonna run the 3.73's for now and see how they hold up, got a locker on the way.
shaving everything that can be shaved, fuel cell behind the rear tires mounted in the frame, getting an 88-98 stepside box, 1piece fiberglass front clip. truck will be lowered unsure how far right now. and some other tips and tricks im picking up from guys on here as i go!

Re: 69 c10 -- first project!!

I hope you don't plan to cut the frame strait down in the middle like you did in the back. It is stronger if you do a kinda curved cut. I will try to find the thread about it.

EDIT: Here is what I was talking about... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=123624
Im not saying it has to be done this way, I just heard it was stronger this way and thought you might want to know about it.

yeah no it wont be a straight cut, itll be at a 45*, my gf's dad is a welder and he's got it all planned out for what we're doing so yeah. building a jig to hold everything true, cut with a zip, weld it back up, fishplate it and boom.... shortbox!

ive followed a couple threads on this site, did some pretty good research on how to do it and im confident we've got a good plan, so im excited to do that, should be done in a couple weeks, going on a little vacation for a week and a bit so when i get home we're chopping it.

You used HACK SAWS to cut the frame... Holy Hot dogs....

You are determined. Or I'm spoiled with power tools, either way.

Re: 69 c10 -- first project!!

well this time equipped with PROPER POWER TOOLS haha we got the frame cut, shortened, welded and plated!!! was really suprised how do-able the job was. took the frame over the the gf's parents garage due to lack of space, 220wiring garage, welding machine and welding experience in my garage.
worked out well, her brother and I did all the grinding and he did all the cutting and welding. he's a 35yr veteran welder so i had full confidence.
we ended up using the 12" piece we cut out of the frame for the fishplate, just cut one flange off and swapped sides and filled it in, should be super-duper strong far as im concerned!!

heres some pics of the battle..........
