VIN Question

I know VIN's may be insignificant to some of you guys, but when I am working on, or restoring, a new truck I like to research the VIN. I am used to the 12 digit VIN's from the mid-60s trucks that I've owned. I see that my 68 VIN is 12 digits as well, but it is supposed to be 15. I am missing some numbers in the 4th or 5th spot (cab to axle) and the 6th & 7th spot (model designation). It's easy enough to figure out the missing digits, but I wanted to ask ya'll.

Are the VIN's on our trucks inconsistent, or is this something unique to a few? Here in Mississippi they didn't title trucks until 1969, so I don't have title/tag problems, but I could see this as a problem for people in other states with getting tags etc.

Re: VIN Question

As far as I know they are supposed to be 12 digits. I just checked mine and it was 12. CE20CZA12061

Re: VIN Question

That's what I thought to, however, the book I have covers Chevrolet VIN's from 1946 to 1972, trucks, El Caminos & Suburbans. The info in the book may be wrong for 1968. My VIN plate and the SPID have the same 12 digit VIN. It seems like it was wrong for a 69 that I owned as well.

Here is the book I used:

this link is for the best vin decode page I have seen on these trucks. it's missing a few things, but is pretty darn close.
these trucks have a 12 digit vin, and in 72 they were 13 digit vins, that book flat out sucks. I have it too, and it has more wrong than right.
wheel base and bed style were not put in the VIN, only ion the model number.

I am assuming you are talking chevy though.... GMC did things there own way.
