It's never simple, is it?
Tonight I was going to put new sway bar bushings on my '71. No problem, that won't take long.... So I get the sway bar off, broke a bolt, no big deal. I was planning to replace them anyway. I start cleaning up the bushing brackets and one is bent, and I mean really out of shape. That's not good.... so under the front I go.... The frame bracket on the drivers side is bent.... looking from the side it's pretty obvious, not sure how I didn't notice it before.... It's pulled forward, like a chain was wrapped around it and the truck yanked around. Great, now I get to pop those rivets and replace that bracket. Amazing how a simple job can snowball into something more

if it was simple, your neighbors would all have cool trucks like us!
You probably have lame neighbors like I do huh? |

Re: It's never simple, is it?
yea, tell me. I spent 4 nights trying to get half of my drivers side u-bolt on the rear axle ( that was rusted solid) out so I could install the lowering blocks I spent 2 nights building! But, dang I love these trucks! Throw a 12 pack of brew into the fun, and it makes it worth it! Just have fun doing it.

Re: It's never simple, is it?
That is an understatement I live in an apartment building, and when I'm wrenching away out in the parking lot some idiot always comes by and makes some stupid comment. I enjoy working on these trucks, but I am always amazed at how badly some of them have been abused. I'll get my bracket and bolts and get that sway bar back on and enjoy the improved ride. It just makes me laugh at how such a small job turns into a big one in a hurry.

Just take a mini sledge and beat it back as straight as you can. It doesn't have to be perfect.

For most people that would be perfectly fine. Problem is, I'm an anal-retentive perfectionist so not having it perfect will bug the ever loving crap out of me

Re: It's never simple, is it?
I have something like OCD... but it is called CDO... in alphabetical order... like it should be!!!
With me, everrything has to be symetrical, otherrwise it bugs the crap outta me. Just take a hammer, and try to straighten the bent one, and when it is close, go to the other side, and bent it so it isn't perfect... then they'll match! |

Re: It's never simple, is it?
if it make you feel better my truck is up on jack stands.....
this mornng I decided it was time to pull the A/C box off and get my air contol damper working proprly since it's starting to get cool in the evening ...so I dump the air bags to make it easy to reach over the rad support pull it all aprt find broken heater/defrost door which has to come out from the otherside so screw it that will be a project for another day....I do find out why my fan only has one speed ( high) I plug it back inot the resitor so theres a FREE BE that I have been chasing for awhile... so I clean every thing back up put it back together things are going well and I'm pretty happy and making good time..........Until......after I clean up I jump in the truck and air it up ...CLUNK?????? WTF is that!!! so I jump out and bounce the hell out of the fender and CLUNK ??CLUNK??CLUNK??.. out comes the jack up in the air on the jackstand ...Looks like my upper control arm bushings are gone so I did find one @ Advanced Auto for $21 complete so at least it was cheap ( Napa was $52) So I guess I know what I'm doing tomorrow........ |

Yes, they were... and the worst part is that I know better than to have that attitude. I've been down this road many times, you would think I would be much more pessimistic when it comes to fixing anything.
