Re: nv4500 swap

you can bolt up the np205 to the NV4500 but you will need an adapter from Advance adapters. I believe they went to driverside drop when they changed to IFS on 4X4's but i'm not sure on that.

Re: nv4500 swap

correct that when they went to ifs is when they switched to drivers side drop.

im sure you can get an adapter from advance adapters or maybe somewhere else.might be pricey$$

another option, looks like you are building a long wheelbase truck.
get a 2wheel drive transmission and run a divorced transfer case.might take a little more fab. but will give much more options on t/case,driveline angles, etc.

Re: nv4500 swap

divorced case could then be driver or pass side drop, whichever you wanted.

Re: nv4500 swap

I thought I read a post once claiming an NP241 out of a 88-91 blazer or burb will work just fine since it already has the round mating flange to match teh NV4500 and the pass. side drop. If you want to keep the mech speedo, you would need the 88/89 unit since they went to elect speedos in 90... hope that helps as I am putting parts together to build a 63 k20 with an NV4500 also...

Re: nv4500 swap

I removed the th400 put a Nv4500 in my truck with a 205. I couple of tips.
Is your Nv4500 out of a gm or Dodge? you want one from a Gm or you have to replace the main shaft of the tranny.

I have a figure 8 205 transfercase. You want a 205 out of a truck with a th400 because they use the large female input shaft, otherwise you have to have the t-case machined to use the bigger female input shaft.

You can use a gm bell housing, but as somebody else said they have the hyd clutch on the pass side because the t-case is a drivers drop. I've been told you must the hyd clutch with that bell housing if your going to use your pass drop 205 and it's a close fit.
The AA parts bolts right up. I converted to a hyd clutch and everything worked nicely.

You use the same clutch as you would with a sm465 tranny so you can always get common parts.

Re: nv4500 swap

i did this swap in my '71. A round pattern np205 will bolt directly to the nv4500 but you will need to swap in a 32 spline input gear. This is a stout set up and eliminates both the need for the expensive AA adapter and the coupler. Next i used an AA bellhousing that let me retain my mechanical clutch setep. -steve

'80's 1 tons with the th400. they have the 6 hole round bolt pattern and 32 spline input gear. if you fail to find such critter you can redrill your case, or do as i and purchase a new empty case and swap the guts over. i payed $300 for my empty round case which might sound like alot but considering the cost of an AA adpater, the fact that i wanted to rebuild my tc, and it directly bolts up the the trans eliminating adapters sleaves and overall length, i found this to be the best route. good luck. -steve

Re: nv4500 swap

Steve,
do you have any pics of the install, especially the interior seat clearance since I know the NV is a few inches longer than the SM465???? Also, did you buy your empty case through a vendor or just an ad on CL or similar,...

Im afraid i do not have any install pics. i did the conversion a few years before becoming a site member and didn't consider documenting the install. i forget the exact length but i know it is a couple inches longer over the 465/205. the trans shifter sits slightly rearward in the original hole but the tcase shifter sits back far enough that its own slot needed cutting in and the knob just touches the bench seat when shifted into 4hi.

I purchased the empty case from GearTech Heavy Duty. Their ad is in the back of one of your favorite 4x4 mags and of course on line. I purchased my new nv4500, AA bellhousing, clutch fork, tc case, 32 spline input gear, and twin stick from him in a complete kit. He was good to work with and eager to help and answer questions. -steve

The LoMax NP205 case has the round pattern (also figure 8) and with a 32-spline female input shaft, if desired.

This site has some detailed info on NV4500s and conversions:

Re: nv4500 swap

you can bolt the 6 bolt 205 to the 4500 with no adapters if you want. You have to get the short 32 spline input from an earlier figure 8 205, grind about 3/8 of an inch off the tranny output, cut a small notch in the tranny/tcase adapter, then slide it all together and build a shifter mount. Its really pretty easy, and the shortest setup you'll be able to build.

The np241 out of a th400 equipped 88-91 suburban or crewcab should bolt up with no mods at all.
