Eaton Rear axle pinion seal.
Has anyone changed the pinion seal on one of these? After I remove the Yoke does the seal come out with the front retainer plate?

Re: Eaton Rear axle pinion seal.
When I thought my pinion seal was leaking I posted this thread that will help you out - ended up not being a pinion problem for me so I didn't have to do anything further.

Re: Eaton Rear axle pinion seal.
After removeing the yoke remove the retainer & you can replace the seal in the retainer. It takes a thick cork gasket behind it but you can use a thick bead of RTV.

Re: Eaton Rear axle pinion seal.
sounds like 2 different answers. If I got it......I remove the yoke.....remove the retainer and the seal is pressed into the retainer and I have the retainer out to take to do it at the work bench???

It's really worth getting your paws on an Overhaul Manual if you can.

Re: Eaton Rear axle pinion seal.
Thanks a bunch guys. Now to order up the seal and get the pen oil out and let it soak up.................I have had to use a chisel as a driver to get some of these nuts loose before on the Jeeps when things got brutal.......then just replace the nuts since they are not that expensive.

Re: Eaton Rear axle pinion seal.
got up the nerve today. Borrowed the 1 5/8 socket and heavy ratchet and breaker bar and a homemade yoke wrench to hold it while i stood on a 6 foot cheater and jumped up and down to free nut. Then the yoke came out very tight on the splines ( a good thing) and I pulled all of the bolts holding the ring on the front. I left it on and stuffed a rag in where the yoke was to kep stuff out of the inside and looked over the seal ride. Not too bad but needs a little work polishing up. \
Is it possible to reposition the seal to run on a different area?? sure would be nice.

Re: Eaton Rear axle pinion seal.
HELP!!!!
The pinion bearings are pretty darn warm and feels like a brake dragging .............. I am desperately looking for a diagram of the rear assembly to figure out if i have the bearing preload too tight by changing gasket on the retainer behind the yoke. I cleaned it good and cut a new gasket. The new material is like .015 thick and the old about .032/ Is the end play being affected on the pinion bearings???? I can't find a book here they are all in storage preparing to move. I am bummed.

Re: Eaton Rear axle pinion seal.
I found a HO52 diagram online and it appears that the bearing load is set by a spacer in front of the front timken cone that is pushed by the yoke when it is installed. I am assuming now that the preload is not affected by the retainer cap at all. Maybe what I feel is okay for temp?? I can put my hand on it,,,,,,,,,,,,but it feels pretty warm after 25 miles. Any experts on this???

Re: Eaton Rear axle pinion seal.
Everything I am finding indicates that the preload on the pinion bearings happens with a spacer between the 2 inner races. Correct me if i am wrong... Maybe the rear end just gets pretty warm????

Re: Eaton Rear axle pinion seal.
I went out there under the truck and with e-brake on and truck in gear I can just rotate the driveline slightly clockwise/counterclockwise indicating the slight gear clearance that it has always had. I can turn the yoke effortlessly. nothing binding, just like it was when I checked it before bolting up the driveline to the yoke . I think the heat thing is just normal.

Re: Eaton Rear axle pinion seal.
Bearing housing barely warm this morning.....................brake drum hot! Dragging brake.............Did i tweak something with E-brake on and torquing up the pinion nut??? I used a yoke tool to hold it when tightening nut.

Re: Eaton Rear axle pinion seal.
The Eaton is pretty simple. The preload on the pinion is controled by the pinion shims. If all you did was replace the pinion seal and did not remove the shims then just retorque the nut to about 220 ft lbs. You should be able to turn the pinion back and forth freely between the backlash. The shims also have an effect on the ring gear back lash. The retainig plate gasket won't make a difference.
Once I ran into a problem when I used a different yoke due to the original yoke having grooves where the seal makes contact, apparently there was a slight difference which caused the preload to be to tight so I had to change the shims. Hope this helps. |

Re: Eaton Rear axle pinion seal.
Yea it is running just barely warm now.......maybe had to take a set. The drag feeling is a dragging brake.
