Re: alot of brake questions
I dont know about the hub question. but one thing I have always been told when it comes to brakes is to replace pairs. front or back, never one wheel. as it can be very dangerous. but open to be corrected.....

Re: alot of brake questions
Yo! Hub too? Geeze! BS,...rotor replacement should be easily done with the same hub, unless there is something wrong with it. Replace bearings (if needed at this point) and seals at the same time,...and I agree,...do both sides at the same time, front or rear.
Best and cheapest would be repack bearings both sides, brake pads both sides, replace that rotor, and new seals both sides. Todd.

Re: alot of brake questions
you can buy the rotor with or without the hub installed.it will be cheaper to just replace the rotor.as far as the locking hub you will need to replace it as the threaded hole is probably cracked and is not repairable(from past experience)if your talking about the allen head ones that hold the outer cover on.

Re: alot of brake questions
Yo! See the above,...it includes what to do with the hub that has a stripped bolt and I've listed what you need. Just clean and repack your bearings if they are shiny. Forum search may give you a full blown procedure for this task,...or Haynes' or Chiltons' manuals.
Todd.

Re: alot of brake questions
The hub and rotor are one piece. They sell for about 30 bucks a piece. First you pop off the dust cap. Then remover the cotter pin and nut.Then you pull the rotor and bearings. You need to the pull out the inner bearing and seal and transfer them to the new rotor. Then You put them back. Need anymore help ask. I just did my entire front as well as my buddy's chevy astro van. The new wheel seals are only 3 bucks each for the two.

Re: alot of brake questions
Damn. Didn't notice that. Best bet would be to go to the local parts store and browse through the Haynes manual.

Re: alot of brake questions
forgot which you have but 1st is manual hubs and the 2cd is auto hubs;
This procedure requires snap ring pliers and a special hub nut wrench. It is not very easy without them. 1. Raise and support the front end on jack stands. 2. Remove the wheels. 3. Lock the hubs. Remove the outer retaining plate Allen head bolts and take off the plate, O-ring, and knob. Take out the large snap ring inside the hub and remove the outer clutch retaining ring and actuating cam body. This is a lot easier with snap ring pliers. Relieve pressure on the axle shaft snap ring and remove it. Take out the axle shaft sleeve and clutch ring assembly and the inner clutch ring and bushing assembly. Remove the spring and retainer plate. 4. Remove the wheel bearing outer lock nut, lock ring, and wheel bearing inner adjusting nut. A special wrench is required. 5. Remove the brake disc assembly and outer wheel bearing. Last edited by powerdriver 1958; 09-25-2009 at 10:56 PM. |

Re: alot of brake questions
Just another thought,If the pads are burnt up on one side only you may have a caliper stuck or a bad brake hose
