Pitman arm on 97 Blazer
Just by looking at it...it appears I have to remove the steering box to change out the pitman arm.. Is this correct? IF so... who is the idiot that designed that? What a PITA.

Re: Pitman arm on 97 Blazer
It's a 4wd... and there is a crossmember less than an inch below the steering box.

Re: Pitman arm on 97 Blazer
remove the input shaft, remove the 2 forward box bolts, loosen the rear one. remove the pitman from the center link. tilt box upwards as far as possible and tighten bolt. use air cut-off to make a slit in the arm almost all the way through. be carefull to not cut the box or go too deep and damage the sector shaft. use chisel bit in air hammer to finish the split and at same time drive arm down off shaft. reverse procedure. then get an alignment as they just cant seem to make the new arm with the same clocking which makes your wheel crooked.
OTC makes a special puller for this but I usually end up doing it my way in the end. opps, forgot to mention you should take out the 2 bolts that hold the brake line and ABS harness to the X member and relocate them to the rear for the process. Seems like there's always something in the way or ya have to remove something else to get at the part ya need to get to. Not familiar with 4x4 S-10's myself.
