Need Help Deciding On A Cam

Ok I have narowed my cam search down to 3 cams. Right now my engine is pritty much stock so I know these arnt the best cams for that but what I wanted was something that would give me a little bit now but also give me a lot of room to grow when I get new heads and whatnot. So with that in mind give me your Sugestions and comments as far as advantages of one over the other. Here they are:

Comp Cams High Energy 268H
Comp Cams Magnum 270H
Comp Cams Xtreme Energy 268H

Thanks guys,

HotRod

I have the Magnum 270, I like it, but I am told by people who I trust on this board that the extreme 268 is a better cam.
With a stock torque converter, the low end grunt was very weak, so I have a 2500 stall unit.

Old Chevy - How did that cam sound at idle? Over all though were you happy with the cam minus the low end grunt with the stock stall? Did you make up for the loss in low end grunt further down the track so to speak? Thanks

Personally, I would run a Crane Energize. The 272 is a nice cam, but wihout all of the other stuff, (intake, carb, exhaust, heads) it's probably too big. All of the Comps you picked are just too big for a mostly stock motor. The Energizer 266 is the best choice if you don't get caught up in the "mine is bigger, or at least as big, as yours" syndrome.

The Energizer cam AND lifters are less $ than just the Comp cam. Leaves you room for a top notch roller timing chain and dinner. The 266 pulls from 1000-4500 rpm, where you need it most of the time. It is the perfect cam for trucks with granny gear 4 speeds as it matches the torque curve to the gear spread quite well. It is compareable to the Comp 260 High Energy cam.

Personally, I think the ramp speed is too high for the XE series Comp cams and 100k mile durability will be non-existent. I have put that kind of mileage on 3 different Energizer cams.

Mike C - I agree with what you are saying that they are almost to big for a plane stocker however when the cam goes in the intake will also change to a Performer RPM. I want something that will work good for now until i get new heads. Just want something to build from. Thanks for the input though. Much apreciated.

I have used the 268H and the 270h magnum in a simular combo as yours..the 268H hi energy..worked very well...the 270 needs a stall converter of 2200-2500 to work very well..bigger would of been better..the 268H( I had a 2000 stall) was great...pulled hard too 5300rpm

The Comp Cams High Energy 268H would be the best of the three you listed with a stock converter and compression ratio. Another cam I'll throw in the mix is the Comp Xtreme Energy 262 I haven't used it myself but I've heard a lot of good things about it from others with 350 combos like yours. Good Luck...Stroker
