fuel gauge dosn't move when driving speed limit.

I tryed to drive right at speed limit in town and noticed fuel gauge doesn't go down as fast. I wasn't speeding before, just driving a little over speed limit. Nobody drives speed limit anyway. When driving like an old man I noticed that a fuel gauge dosn't go down as fast. It's hard to do because there is alway someone trying to pass you or get in front of you or better yet cut you off. Usually I will cut them back but I am trying to stop doing it. Maybe my c10 will get ok mpg if driving this way. So how do you control yourself to drive speed limit or close to it?

When driving these old babys around, at least to me, it's not how fast you get there, it's about enjoying the drive itself, so I slow down, go the speed limit, and just enjoy the drive. I avoid the highways and most roads that go over 55.

If you have a truck that hasn't had an overdrive transmission installed in it, yeah, the slower you go, you'll see a slight improvement in MPG.

With my 700R on the highway, I've noticed if I go 75-80mph I only get 15mpg. If I slow down to 55-60mph, I've pushed almost 17 mpg. Never actually hit that, but real close. I think my best tank ever was 16.8mpg. When on the highway, I try to go a few mph over the speed limit so I don't get run over too!

finding something large to follow seems to help with the mielage.

Dang nab it! You've figgered it out. You young whipper snappers thought we was driving slow cause our reflexes aren't as good as they used to be. Heck, we're just trying to save some of that petrol for y'all. We've burnt our share.

btw: my wife is on me all the time for driving 60 mph on the freeway. I tell her since I retired, I just ain't in not hurry anymore.

I'm not even close to retiring, but I still don't speed. I don't have to "do" anything to keep from speeding. It's just not my thing. I plan my time and I am not in a hurry to get anywhere.

If you got a Rochester Q-jet when your on the freeway you might be getting into those huge secondaries which really suck gas. I found this to be true with mine. Same is true if your punching it around town.

It's a qjet. I really like the sound when the secondaries are opening.

How in the world do you guys go 55 or 60 on the freeway with a 700r4. I've got a 350/700r4 and 3.73 gears, and the engine is just lugging at that speed. I always thought lugging it caused the mpg to go down.

??? My truck loves 55-60 mph. My truck's "sweet spot" seems to be about 60 mph.

You're engine should not be lugging at those speed with a 700R. Are you 100% sure you don't have a 3.08 rear?

My truck will average the same no matter what unless I dip into the secondaries. It makes a lovely noise at around 3500 rpm so if I'm feelin' good just about every go is with the primaries open wide if I want my presence heard. Makes a great noise with out going too fast. And my speedometer is way off, but I know what the speedo says vs. real life, so it's an approximation no matter what I do. Or if it's too cold... the thing just dances like crazy at freeway speeds.

My job is pizza delivery. So, I don't speed. I drive effectively.

On a side note, if you follow an 18 wheeler, even with a truck cab in back you can make 14 mpg. From Grand Prairie to Huntsville on a single tank!
