factory oil pressure gauge failures?

Can they leak somewhere other than the fitting going into the back?

I've got oil coated all under the lip of the dashboard, and the copper line going into the back of the gauge looks and feels dry.

I'm thinking about just disconnecting it and running without it. How useful is an oil pressure gauge anyway, it just tells you if your due for a $2000 re-build or not.

Or if you have a lubrication failure, you can turn the engine off before thousands of dollars of irreparable damage takes place.
