from what I understand, a R20 and C20 are the same, but its just a name change. the K means 4x4.

Yes.

When the 1988 GMT400 series truck was being designed the older C/K truck was still in use. Since the new truck was to use the C/K designation, just as the old truck had, the engineering team had to choose some way to keep them separated (in the engineering parts list, marketing info, etc) while they both were in use.

Any letter combinations that weren't already in use could have been chosen; perhaps it is somewhat unfortunate but "R" was chosen to represent the two wheel drive, "V" to represent 4 wheel drive. Hence - "R/V", essentially the same as the immediately prior "C/K' but for these transitional model years.

Incidently, the day I left the assembly plant to join the Engineering team was the day the announcement was made that the C/K group was going to split: one group covering the new C/K (the GMT400) and one group covering current product (the R/V truck).

I had no idea what anyone was talking about or of the gravity of the situation. My only thought was "...pllllleeeeaaaaassseeee don't send me back to the assembly plant!

One more thought: we never used that strategy again.

When we went from the GMT400 to the GMT800, and again from the GMT800 to the 900, we left the alpha designations the same. We changed the "model codes" in order to keep the various series straight.

For example: C10703 became a C15703; a K20953 became a K25953, etc.
