help. cant find the culprit - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

so i was goin on highway few days ago. and then i felt something different in the gas pedal.. then i look to pass somebody since i dont have a rear view mirror then i see im creating smoke so i pull off onto the shoulder and leave it running.. and i see oil coming out faster then u can pour it in.. i mean it was a constant flow.. and so i shut it off. and later that night got it home. and now today (sunday) i come to the the truck to try and fix it and i cant seem to find the leak i dont wann go spend $20 on oil just to see where its coming from since i leaked it all out.. i drove it up on the trailer so i think it still runs fine so i dont think i threw a rod or nothing.. what would you look for? when i seen it leaking it was right next to the tranny but it was motor oil.. but the lines were on the other side. the lines werent by where it was leaking.. any ideas?

i would guess oil filter...but that is just a stab in the dark...down near the transmission/opposite of the lines...s.

buy some oil or find some used oil
If you figure it out, you'll be needing some oil anyways.

Did you look at the oil pressure gauge line? It screws in the back of the block at the manifold.

Could have a cracked the copper oil line, that comes from the back of the block by the dist.

OK 2 things
1 if its an older block it may hvae an adaptor for the oil filter that may have worked loose...so wiggle the filter...I had this issue it took me forever to find it I thought I had the wrong filter on it

2 oil presure guage inline next to the Dizzy could be broke and running down the side this too will look like a filter issue

having the accellerator cable leanin on the oilpressure gauge would change the feel of the pedal when the cable finally broke thru the oil line

You know... I'm going to go out and make sure mine isn't leaning against the oil pressure line right now... just as a precaution.

Also- if you just changed the oil, I'd check to make sure there aren't 2 seals under the filter (sometimes the old one sticks to the filter mount). A friend of mine had a quick change place do that to his 67 Firebird and his motor blew about 2 miles out.

ill check those lines. i just changed the pressure line in july but it mightve broke or something. im gonna go spend some money on some oil to see where its coming. and watch nice oil drain all over the driveway haha.. whatever i gotta do to make it better right haha. but oil filter is pretty stout its not wiggling

Thats okay. My younger brother in law didn't know that the oil pressure guage actually had oil going thru it, so when he cut it off and left it hanging there, first time he drove the truck he ruined a brand new pair of blue jeans and boots.

At least it was a cheap fix.

Your lucky. About thirty-six years ago i was driving a 1950 F**d Victoria up a hill in Spokane. I saw a bunch of blue smoke in my rear view mirror and then there was a loud bang. When I got out of the car, (Or what was left of it) I saw a big puddle of oil coming out from under the car. I popped the hood and saw there was a connecting rod hanging out of the side of the block. Sold the car to the tow truck guy for $15. and took the train home. I know, serves me right for driving a F**d!
