Wood Bed Project
I got my wood bed kit for the 55 short bed and would like some suggestions on what to finish it with. I got the pine boards and will will stain it and apply some good exterior varnish, but I haven't done one for 7 years so is there any good stuff on the market now days? I used Varithane last time.

Re: Wood Bed Project
Thanks for the tip blackdiesel, i seen that report before that you referred to and it looked like the por 15 Pelucid would do the trick but I went to por 15 web page and in refers to that product as " interior only. I emailed them and they said that it was not for exterior, and they would have something next year. They recommened Glisten PC , and looking at the report that was the worst one. I will stain in and apply some good marine varnish. I wont drive much in the rain anyway, Thanks again for all your suggestions

Re: Wood Bed Project
I just replaced the wood in my 59' GMC. Purchased the Mar-K pine kit with standard steel rails and zinc hardware. Painted everything with POR-15 and then top coated the planks with a 2 brush coats of Rustoleum flat black and the rails/hardware with 2 spray coats of Rustoleum gloss black. Looks pretty darn good.
My truck is not garaged so I was looking for a finish that could stand up to our rough California winters. (Do we have winter here?) I went with the Rustoleum instead of the latex exterior Mar-K used in their test as mine is a "work truck" and I thought the latex would scuff off easier. Plus I read somewhere that "black" was how they came originally from the factory. I guess time will tell. Have fun..... -Steve |
