Pinging Problems
Ok here's my dilemma my engine seems to ping pretty bad on the drivers side only(350) at part throttle, even with vacuum advance disconnected. It has 9.5-1 compression with iron heads. I have to back the timing off to where it doesn't ping for me to drive it and when its backed off that far the timing is too retarded and I get full throttle stumbles. It'll ping when cold too. I've tried different advance springs, when it runs good ( no stumbles) the timing is 34 deg all out at 3200 rpm but It will ping on the freeway. Should I try a colder plug? Or could my jetting be too lean and making it ping? I'm pretty frustrated with this blasted thing, it's new and I can't even have fun with it without problems.

Re: Pinging Problems
What octane fuel are you running? Cheap gas can cause pinging. With that compression, I would be running 91 in it.

Re: Pinging Problems
Could be several things or all the things I mention.
To hot a plug, high zinc/lithium oil ( Diesel oil) and worn valve guides or a lot of blow by in the engine. The zinc gets into the cylinders and you get hot spots and pinging. Use an oil that is for later model engines not the high Zinc oil, run a R43TS (colder) plug and 93 octane gas, Set your timing at 6-8 BTDC. Thats the only way I got mine to stop pinging and run decent. My other option is a rebuild to stop the blow by and fix the guides. Last edited by dwcsr; 10-24-2009 at 07:59 PM. |

Re: Pinging Problems
I figured with your detailed post that you were running 91, but had to ask
Too bad 91 is the best we can get here

Re: Pinging Problems
Running lean can make it ping as well. What type / size carb are you running? Does it do it at WOT also?

Re: Pinging Problems
OK, Edelbrock makes a few different versions of the 600. Look on the front of the carb just below the passenger side front mounting ear where it bolts to the intake. The part number should be stamped there. The two most common versions are the 1405 and 1406. The 1406 is calibrated for a near stock engine and is lean calibrated for fuel economy. The 1405 is calibrated richer for a performance engine. If you're pushing 400hp you probably need the 1405, however if you have the 1406, it can be calibrated richer.
Here's what I would do. Buy or borrow an air fuel ratio monitor. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/EDL-6593/?image=large and see where the AFR is at part throttle. If it's indicating lean at that point, you can use a calibration kit http://www.summitracing.com/parts/EDL-1487/?image=large to richen the carb at part throttle with the various jets, metering rods and step up springs. Here are some links to tuning the Edelbrock carbs: http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles...ing/index.html http://www.telusplanet.net/public/gi.../section_2.htm |

Re: Pinging Problems
Well I'm over 400hp. I know I have the one tuned for performance, the 1405. I'll have to take it into shop class we have A/F gauges there. I think my next step is colder plugs and jetting it up
