Help me please

Here's the deal: Just bought my new truck a couple weeks ago. Drove it for quite a while with no problems. Now, i can start it up and it will stay rnning for a minute or two then die, like you just turn the key off. I checked my distributor and coil, put a new fuel pump on it, cleaned out the carb like crazy, and it still doesnt work. Yesterday i noticed that when it died, all of the lights and my radio went off with it, then turned right back on. Also, my battery died. We can charge it up with another truck and get my truck running for a few minutes, then it'l die and we have to charge the battery again. So, could this be just an alternator problem, or what? Because it has me, my dad, and all of my dad's friends stumped on what is going on.

Thanks, Collin

Re: Help me please

Sounds like your voltage regulator or possibly the alternator. You're not getting voltage to the battery (since it is not charging) or to the coil which is why it's stalling. Check the alternator first, then the regulator.

Re: Help me please

Collin,

Set a known good fully charged battery in your truck, Start it up then check the alternator output across the battery post with a multimeter. It should put out between 13.5 to 14.8 DC volts if it's good, If much lower the alternator belt could be loose or the alternator it's self has failed.

Re: Help me please

start with the basics. check all your battery cables and connections as well. chances are you have a bad alternator. these old trucks will run for a long while on a fully charged battery.
