Aftermarket SWB bed kits - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Would like to get some experiences and opinions on the aftermarket bed kits. Looking at the one that soky sells. Is there others out there? What kind of quality and problems if any with them?

Welcome to the Board DC Cobra. Are you talking about the entire bed or wood kits? www.lmctruck.com sells both. Remember that most aftermarket parts places get their parts from the same suppliers and the sheetmetal parts are made overseas and are of dubious quality and fit. The problems range from arriving with dents and scratches to just plain not lining up. I think when you see the prices for an entire bed, you might want to consider getting an original one from a salvage yard or private party. I have seen beds come up on Ebay and Craig's List several times.

Considering a whole bed kit. Have looked at a couple of original beds but lots of rust issues and quite a few dents. Bodyshops love to charge extra for this type of repair. Just thought there might be a good choice of an aftermarket assembly to start with (higher price) versus used bed with damage and repairs (higher and highest prices) for a finished product.

I saw a complete after market bed at the Des Moines, IA swap meet and it looked pretty darn nice to me. I'm thinking about going that direction on one of my trucks. As unclewatts said, some of the parts can have issues so you need to try and find a dealer close enough that you can go look at the parts and pick them up to save shipping costs. It seems to me that the quality of the parts keep improving if you buy from established dealers. I would never buy parts from any dealer that is not knowledgeable about our trucks and what parts are good and what parts to avoid.
