Few questions from a first time C10 owner in the UK!
Hey guys
I bought my first pick-up a few weeks ago & have been doing a few jobs on it. I have a few questions i hope you guys can answer. I have a '79 C10 fleetside 2 wheel drive, ex-us army. 1:How often should the oil in the rear diff be changed & what type is it? 2:The sterring wheel has some play in it & i need to get it sorted. Whats the easiest way to solve this? 3: WHats a good place to get cheap spares from? Thanks I'll get some pics up as soon as i can Jamie |

My #1. Welcome to the board...
Your #1. oil in the rear lasts a long time, it should be changed if submerged in water (docking a boat on a triler) or every 100,000 miles (just a guess). Should use 90W gear lube, if it has a posi then it needs an additive added. #2. Probably the tie rod ends and ball joints on the truck. Check to see if the play is in the steering box or linkage to the wheels, have a buddy help by turning the wheel while you watch the parts move. The steering box can be rebuilt if needed. #3. Cheap spares? like tires? or parts?

Re: Few questions from a first time C10 owner in the UK!
Hey
The play seems to be between the wheel & somewhere where it goes in to the bulk head. The steering box is new & there is no play that end. A mate has sat in & turned the wheel but there was no play under the hood. Thoughts?? Thanks for the info on the oil, as for parts i just meant general parts i.e suspension, electrics, etc. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks |

its just a shaft through the column... unless the steering wheel itself is n o good... pull the horn cover and see if there is play in there

do you have a tilt wheel? if so then some of the bolts could be loose inside...
I think O'reilly auto parts or advanced auto ships overseas, not sure though..

Most of the major auto parts stores ship overseas, but you must remember the it is very expensive, you are best to find a local auto restoration store or even dismantler (we have them in New Zealand) and order parts through them.
Another way is to join a hot rod or custom car club that is dedicated to American cars, they will be able to put you in touch with people that import and sell parts or even club members that have parts for sale. That has worked for me here.

Check to see if the frame where the steering box is held is not cracked. It is very common and will cause play. Welcome to the board
Check the regonal area and see how they get parts. Good luck!
