Truck didnt start this AM, ?electrical trouble?

Had the same prob. last friday..

Anyhow, I woke up this morning to jump into the truck and takeoff to school, well I turned the key, volt guage (aftermarket) read 8 volts try to start and all my idiot lights come (when i move key from on to start) on including generator, and motor doenst turn over. Well I check connections only to find they're tight. So I figure My 8 year old autozone duralast battery needs replacing. I put it on the trickle charge and have dad take me to school in the 'manvan' (his truck is in the autobody shop because he has trouble backing up lol, he gota rental car van). Fast forward to after school. I get home, check truck, same as this morning. Put on 50 amp jump start, let it sit a little go to start it and ALMOST has enough juice to start. So I have dad take me to town to have my batt. checked, (right now Im hoping I need a 70$ new battery). Well guy checks it says its got too much water (thanks dad! he claimed it needed water on friday when It wouldnt start, oh btw I let the truck sit all day friday, got home and it started WTF) Anyhow, he said I had a lil much water in my batt. it was distilled water. And it was low on charge. (it has been charging on 2amp all day).

So I got home tonite (a few min. ago) and tighted all batt. to starter. ground. cleaned connections. and gonna let batt. charge a lil more and hopefully when I go outside in a few it'll crank.

Any ideas on What this may be.

Also, it may just be a coincidence. But my radio quit working around the same time.....Havent checked that one out yet...And I put a random fuse in the guage cluster spot because it blew.

Any ideas!....

Re: Truck didnt start this AM, ?electrical trouble?

if you checked the connections, I would bet on the batt. Let mine sit up for about two months while traveling for business and returned my brother had turned to key too far back to the acc position. Tried to charge, then jump. Barely got a turn out of it. New batt, BOOM! Everything worked great.
Hope you figure it out.

if you have a good batt., and good connections, then id start checking for a bad starter or ignition switch.

Re: Truck didnt start this AM, ?electrical trouble?

I bought the Walmart Yellow Batt. Everstart MAXX-24FS. 875 cc amps. 3 year replacement warranty too! Its been great for us. Another thing I noticed about your orig thread. You said you read about 8v on keyturn? The truck should read around 12v on keyturn and bump to about 14-16 when the alt takes over. At least that's what mine reads and I've read other threads when we set ours up that backed that up. Might be your biggest indicator right there. AZone can usually put your batt on a "deep charge" overnight for free to see if it can recover most of your batts residual capacity. Might be something to look into. Mine was "HAMMER" dead. Check your amps again on keyturn and see if it fluctuates at all during keyturns. Repeat that a few times and see if there's a change in your readings.

Re: Truck didnt start this AM, ?electrical trouble?

It is very rare for a battery to last for 8 years.

If I have the same problem you are having I get a known good battery out of another vehicle and try it.

If the battery from another vehicle works do a voltage check with the truck running. The voltage should be around the 13.5 to 14.5 volt range.

A new battery's price will vary depending on the cold cranking amps and where you get it, maybe $50 to $75.

Re: Truck didnt start this AM, ?electrical trouble?

Well.

Id borrow the batt. out of the other vehicle, but its currently a rental van aka manvan lol dad wont let me bum parts offa it.

the 53' is still 6 volt

anywho, I charged batt. for awhile cleaned tightened connections. went inside and looked at this site (addicing, im on here and should be in the cold working on my truck lol)

IT RUNS!

need to get out and buy a new timing light, get it running better wire my choke before it gets colder, buy a new batt. order more truck parts etc.

BUT IT RUNS ENOUGH TO GET ME TO SCHOOL TOMOROW HOPEFULLY lol

its gotta sticker on the side that says C-1 he (guy at 'a zone' said that stood for 2001 so 8 years old, think I should buy a new one?

Oh and i saw a guy with a swb step 67. It was dark, i was carrying a heavy battery only talked long enough to say 'nice 67 ive gotta 68 im workin on' he asked if i knew were a grill for it was, i didnt right off. I came back out to be a good diciple and tell him about 67-72chevytrucks.com but he was gone..

thanks guys
