What about the flexfuel ly5
I have a chance to pick up a 2008 flex fuel ly5 out of a suburban. I was thinking about putting it in my truck. I would like some pics of it or maybe some comments on how to ideas....Long story short.. the sub was wrecked on the 2nd day of owner ship. so there is almost no miles. and its ummm free.... not stolen its a slavage truck...

Re: What about the flexfuel ly5
Flex fuel engines have larger injectors and stainless fuel rails both a plus (doesn't really mean anything, people adding cams, heads etc seem to like them?)
The Gen IV engines have DOD (displacement on demand) and VVT (variable valve timing). Most people don't have a problem with this (I bought a 2005 5.3 with 5 miles because I was unsure of those features). The Gen IV engines also have a separate PCM for the engine and one for the transmission. Not all tuners have the ability to tune the newer PCMs but many do. For the right price (especially free) I would not hesitate!! |

Re: What about the flexfuel ly5
As far as a swap goes most is the same as any Gen III or IV engine as far as wiring, fuel, plumbing. There is a wealth of information on this site and quite a few others. I researched for about a month, took a month to buy an engine and I have my old one ready to be pulled as we speak.
There are adapter engine mounts in a few flavors. No fewer than 10 people/companies reworking the harnesses for a 4-5 wire hookup.( from $300 to $800) Battery constant, key on, fuel pump, Tach, speedo (if you want electronic), TCC (torque converter lockup operates oposite of a brake switch, readily available switch). You can also do the harness yourself with help from here and a few websites. You will need at least an external fuel pump with a filter regulator (most use a corvette filter/regulator). That engine will also have DBW (drive by wire), an electric gas pedal which is no problem just make sure you get it and any wiring with it. I don't think they still have a TAC that year (throttle actuated control), a little black box that the pedal plugs into). I think the PCM handles that now. One advantage to DBW is you can now have cruise control with the connection of about 5 wires and a switch! Last edited by Thealien; 12-03-2009 at 10:40 PM. |
