steer box for the 64
I have a 64 lwb. The power sterring box I have doesnt appear to be the right box for my truck - the PO welded some steel plates to the frame rail and has this power box bolted onto the plate with steel spacers - so the box doesnt look like it bolted directly to my frame in other words.
Id prefer to go with a manual box to run 1 less accessory belt - but the only box I find fro Gm is the '525' box that is like $250 bucks!?!? First question, Is that the right box for our trucks? Anybody have a source for them? ***Please know I am not posting this as a WTB thread Thanks for any advice/guidance guys!!! Last edited by 63 & 64 Bowties; 12-22-2009 at 04:55 PM. |

Re: steer box for the 64
poking around, maybe I just need to use one of these brtackets from CaptainFab instead of the mish-mosh the PO tried using. I still dont think I want to run power though, but it seems thqat these boxes are used for manual or power - does that mean they have the same gearing inside? if so i wonder if I can just block off the hose bungs and run without a pump????

Re: steer box for the 64
Hey BlackMopar,
You need to use a manual box if you are going manual. The "gearing" is not the same and would be very difficult to steer without the hydraulics. Here is a picture of the manual box for a 65, should be the same for 64. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=374519 TR

Re: steer box for the 64
IF you choose to go with on of Captainfabs plates you can use a manual box box from a 67 to 87 2wheel drive it mounts the same as the power box and is a far better design than the origonal 64 box

Re: steer box for the 64
Yea I figured the gearing would be different. And also the more I looked into i realzie the boxes arent the same.
