06 w/ 5.3 burning oil?
My 06 silverado w/ the 5.3 and 42000 miles is now burning a quart of oil every 1500 miles. I did some online research and i found that this is not uncommon and chevy has a service bulletin on it. Does anyone have any experience with this? Has anyone seen the service bulletin? or know what the problem is?

Re: 06 w/ 5.3 burning oil?
oh yeah. forgot to add that i change my oil and filter every 3000. used conventional up to the 36000 mark and never had to add between changes even though it did burn a little but was still in range on the dipstick. switched to mobil 1 syn. at 36000 and have had to add oil between oil changes

Even though I am a fan of synthetics I would try switching back to what you were using and see if it goes back to burning just a "little"

Re: 06 w/ 5.3 burning oil?
Had the mechanic at work print out the service bulletin for me and like truckdude239 said it is caused by a nick in one or more of the valve stems, is common in low mileage vehicles, and the recommended repair is to replace the cylinder heads. i bought my truck before the 5 yr. 100,000 powertrain so it looks like this one is on me. This is my first chevy, and have been pretty disappointed. I want my 91 f150 and 24,000 dollars back

i'd still call the dealer and ask them if there is something they can do for you

Re: 06 w/ 5.3 burning oil?
I agree, they have special conditions sometimes and cover things just slightly out of warranty..

Re: 06 w/ 5.3 burning oil?
You also haven't definitely found the problem yet.
You're 100% sure there's no leak? Are you doing any heavy towing or a lot of 4wd use? That will cause oil consumption to increase. Also check for a plugged PCV. I think your truck should have the fixed orifice one. It's at the back of the valve cover on the driver's side. When you pull it, it should have just a small hole drilled in it. If not, if it's the one with the check ball, you may want to replace it with the "fixed orifice" one. My 2000 did the same thing a few years ago, she was going through almost a quart every 1000 miles, I put the fixed orifice PCV in it and it uses maybe an 1/8 quart between 5,000 mile Mobil One changes. What I have mentioned is also a TSB too, but like I said, I think GM put the fixed orifice in the later 5.3's BUT without knowing, you or someone may have replaced it without knowing it doesn't need to be changed.

Re: 06 w/ 5.3 burning oil?
looked into my pcv valve and apparently its not meant to be replaced. its not in a rubber grommet like most, it appears pressed into my valve cover. and while i was at the local auto parts store i looked up the replacement part and it said N/R meaning "not required". i guess it is the fixed orifice type, and they are not supposed to go bad. Does anyone know if they do go bad anyway? and to get back to you, i really don't drive my truck hard. I hardly tow anything and use the 4wd occasionally. thank you and i really appreciate the help and responses.

Re: 06 w/ 5.3 burning oil?
My 2000 has a rubber grommet that the PCV goes into and it comes out pretty easy, so it must be the fixed orifice type. No, there's no way that they can "go bad" that I know of. It's just an empty PVC with a small hole drilled in it. My 99 S-10 doesn't have a replacable PCV either.

Re: 06 w/ 5.3 burning oil?
My 07 has the same issue. burns roughly a quart of oil every oil change. all i go is hwy driving. I'm going to look at the PCV valve and see if that's the issue. good post guys. Thanks!

Re: 06 w/ 5.3 burning oil?
There is also a problem with the oil rings being bad. Just had an 08 Tahoe with the 5.3 in at work a couple weeks ago that had to have new pistons and rings installed to cure the oil consumption problem. Very low miles on it. May look into that.
