Which ball joints to use?
I have a '65 3/4 ton which I want put disc brakes on. I have steering knuckles from a '73 and plan to buy calipers, rotors etc new. Will the new '65 ball joints work with the '73 spindles? One more question. When I did a search on the master cylinder I read that the master cylinder and booster from a '73 to '78 would work. Is this right? Is the porportioning valve built into these or do I have to add it?
Thanks for your help. I am new to this site and I think its great. |

i don't think so...................i upgraded my 65 burb to disc brakes off of a 71.............................the 65 spindles were too short................had to change the ball joints to match the 71 spindles............i think the ball joints from 71-80 will work for you..............not too sure about the master cylinder and booster...........or proportioning valve.............HEMMIT

you could put the crown nut on the ball joints but the hole for the cotter pin didn't show.............i don't know about you but i thought that it probably be pretty dangerous withuot the pins in..............you wouldn't want to be going down the road and have stuff coming off.......................................changing the ball joints to 71 cured the problem...............i also had to change the tir rod ends also..................all new stuff and the ride was great.........almost as good as my 98 GMC............it was a worthwhile change that was pretty straight forward to do........HEMMIT

I recently put 71 spindles in my 64, with the disc brake set up. I had to use 71 upper and lower ball jounts. Dont try to use the old style. The conversion is great but had trouble with tierods etc but eventualy got it worked out

Hemmit is right. One thing to remember is with the 73 and up spindles, you will need the 73 and up tie rod ends. The 60-72 ends are tall and skinny, the 73 and up are short and fat.

You will have to add the prop valve. Kits are available or acquire one from the your local "yard" Hope this helps.

a complete crossmember swap is what i'm going to do on my 66 c10 you can go to www.stovebolt.com they talk about this stuff all the time me myself i would just swap out the whole crossmember and be done with it but thats me..........the booster should have a prop valve connected to it at least when i went to the junkyard and looked at ht 72-86 every hood i poped up had the prop valve with it. i got my booster a prop at the louisville swap meet it is on my 66 right now and i'm just using the rear part of the master on drums and the brakes a 2 times better
