Side mirror law in TX?
my 67 suburban came with only a driver mirror, which i took off for now. i was thinking of shaving the holes up and not running any side/door mirrors. is this legal in texas? this will never be my daily driver, just a weekend driver and occasionally during the week. if it is illegal, its no big deal, but if i do run mirrors i would want to run one on each side. if its not, then ill probably shave it up.
how would i go about adding a mirror that didnt have one? and could i get brand new mirrors like my original? [IMG][/IMG] i do like to use them, but i was thinking i could use some sort of clip on style mirrors if i had to run something...

Re: Side mirror law in TX?
it is the law in 99.9% of the land. with out you might be fixing a lot of sheet metal if you miss seeing something you should have seen.

Re: Side mirror law in TX?
My concern would be...there would be a major blind spot that you would have w/o a mirror.
I for one am not a fan of fender benders.

Re: Side mirror law in TX?
you can remove them, but you'll end up puttin them on one day. Either a LEO looking for a reason to pull you over, an anual inspection, or when you mess up a quarter panel parking by brail method.

Re: Side mirror law in TX?
TX law only requires one rear view mirror to pass inspection. If you have one in the center of the windshield that is sufficient as far as the law goes. Even if it is legal, as others have already stated, It's not very safe.

Re: Side mirror law in TX?
seems texas lets a lot of stuff fly lol. even when i use my rear views on the side i still turn around to check my blind spots. i sure would miss not having any but they look so much cleaner without them.
do they make mirrors to clip on for temporary use?

Re: Side mirror law in TX?
In hyper-regulated Austin, we're getting worse and worse about inspections. Already got the sniffers, and thank heavens my 69 is exempt. The one thing they seem semi-logical about is mirrors. I've gotten my 65 Malibu inspected for years with only a windshield mirror. There are no mounts on the doors for rearview mirrors.
What several inspectors told me, is if they see mounting locations on the doors for mirrors and the mirrors are absent (like the holes drilled and nothing's there), they'll flunk the inspection. Just my 2 cents worth. |

Re: Side mirror law in TX?
as OhOneWS6 has in the link in his answer, you only need one mirror. Any inspector that will fail you for having holes where a mirror was is writing their own law. Go somewhere else or call the state on them for failing you for no just cause.

i find it interesting that Texas writes there own laws and think they can trump federal DOT laws.

Re: Side mirror law in TX?
Seriously? You can eliminate the Texas front plate if you have antique plates?
My bad!

Re: Side mirror law in TX?
I get my 94 Z28 Camaro inspected all the time without a front license plate. And driven past DPS, City of Austin Police, San Marcos Police, New Braunfels Police and San Antonio Police without ever getting ticketed.
However, this just goes to show how unpredictable the inspection nazis have become, at least in metro Austin. I don't have time to tell all the bizarre inspection stories I've gone through in the last 27 yrs of living in Austin. I DID beat one inspector, called the DPS on him for some BS he was giving me about the Camaro. The DPS actually came to my house, inspected the Z and said it passed. They went to the inspection station and cited the guy, who apparently had been cited a few times before for various BS (which of course they gratiously offer to repair, for a fee of course). I left the inspection station when the shouting match between the inspector and the DPS went into a room in the back. LOL The trick of moving out to Bastrop or NB etc prolly ain't gonna work soon. With Travis coming real close to exceeding the new ozone standards, all the adjacent counties and even counties one away from that may be going to sniffers in '10 or '11. |

A good friend of mine was a DPS trooper up until last year. He told me not running a front plate just gives them an excuse to pull you over.
