Thumbs down Apparently all I get is one day of driving

Well, got my truck on the road for the season last weekend, didn't drive it all week. Finally the weekend is here! I got up early, went out started 'er up....mmmm nice. Got out drove a total of about 3 miles, stopped at a stop sign waiting to turn left. A nice guy stopped to let me out through all the traffic then, oh Sh!t this asshole decides to whip out around him as im turning, so I slam the brakes, jerk it into reverse, the wheels spin and hop once, and then BAM!!! no more reverse!!! fook.

I dropped the tranny...no reverse and the forward gears barely worked, so I drove it parked it and cried. So now I'm looking for a new one. Anyone know if a Muncie 4-speed will replace a saginaw 4-speed? as far as dimensions go, are they the same size/length. Also what about the number of splines on the input/output shafts?

Or better yet, anyone have a good one for sale? either Sag or Muncie?

Anyways, now I'm bummed, barely got a taste of driving and now its gone...

Yea, when I finally got enough money to put insurance on my truck I got to drive it 3 days. It used to have one badass 350 in it. Then all the sudden Im driving down the road one night at like 11:45 at night and "Bam bam bam bam bam bam" it starts backfiring, then tons of smoke pour in the cab with me and I slam on the brakes and start fish tailing and do a 360 in the middle of the road. I was 3 miles from home and had my friends amp and sub in my truck and just bought a 300 dollar cd player and put it in there and 2 $80 6x9's that night. I didnt have my cell phone with me cause It didnt have a charge when I left. I was like "uh oh what do I do now stay with the truck and wait till someone comes or sprint/jog home?" I stayed with the truck for 30 minutes and no one came buy so I was like "I guess I take out runnin". So I run home and wake my mom up (my dad wasnt home at the time) and was like "come on my truck is broke we gotta go pull it home" She was like "we can just leave it there til tomorrow". I was like "uh no" and finally convinced her to help me pull it home with her ford explorer (don't worry she didnt buy it she won it from coca cola, but that is another story). Finally we got it home and come to find out It slung 2 rods and cracked the block, broke the cam, put about a jillion holes in the oil pan, and a few other things. So then a few days later me and my dad went to the junkyard and got what is now in my truck, a stock 305 out of an 86 caprice. And finally got it in after about 20 days of cleaning and such on the 305. I dont regret getting this smaller motor one bit because it runs alot better than the 350 that was in it. I don't care about the loss of power I don't race anyway. To make a long story long I am alot happier with this motor.

Try ebay for a saginaw, they are all over there and cheap. I got mine off ebay last year for less than $200 with shipping. I see most are going for a little more now, but you can get one already rebuilt and ready to go. Or just rebuild yours. It costs like $150 to have it done. If you didn't actually break anything, it will be quick. If you did happen to break a shaft or gear it will be more. Going from forward to reverse is never good in a manual trans, should have been really hard to do with a saginaw, since reverse isn't a costant mesh gear. I bet there was all kinds of grinding going on. Anyway, have yours looked at to see if it can be rebuilt. They can still get parts for them easily.

GOOD LUCK!!!

No grinding...it was because of the shock the transmission took. I sorta peeled out in reverse to try and get outta the way, the wheels hopped instead of spin, and on like the second hop, just a huge bang and revvvvvvv. Then in forward gears on the drive home I babied it, but it sounded like there were about 20 metal marbles flyin around in there, and some slipping...I was scared

Drain it and take the side cover off. I bet you broke a gear. There should have been no slipping. In a manual trans, it's either in gear or not. No room for slip. If you had slip you may have donw something to your clutch. Also check your U-joints on your drive shaft for excessive play. maybe one of them died. The wheel hop wouldn't cause this problem, it's the tremendous torque you sent thru the trans. If you look inside, and there are gear parts, then I would find a new trans. If you look inside and no gear parts, then have it rebuilt. Muncies are nice and beefy, but waaaay to expensive. You could rebuild your saginaw three times for the cost of a mincie that needs a rebuild.

I assume you have a car saginaw 4-speed, right? Not the granny 4-speed that came in the trucks.

Ya it was definately the shock that caused it...I have a friend who can probably rebuild it. Or he knows a guy that has a couple transmissions. I just have to play with my options now.

Are you sure it's the trans? If it is the saginaw is easy to overhaul, and parts are very reasonable. I recently did mine. It was long overdue, but it sure works nice now. The master rebuild kit had everything (except gears of course). If your tranny is fubar they aren't that hard to find.

Sorry to hear the bad news Mandarin. You wont want to hear that I just put mine back on the road two days ago. Good luck with the tranny hunt. I had to pull the motor on mine and mount a new fuel pump ( it died over the winter ) then replaced front and rear seals and last and most importantly gave the block a fresh coat of paint. Hurry up and get that truck of yours back together before the weather starts getting really nice there in the Okanagan.....
