carb trouble

I bought this old carb and intake and cleaned it in my shower with CLR and oven cleaner and now it's just sitting around the apartment, also I filled it with the cleaners to remove all the black then had to use water to rinse it all out it looks a lot better. i know i should probably refill the fuel bowl and put a bag over it but it is in our apartment..........

any ideas? is there something esle i can use?

Thats an AFB carb. looks like an edelbrock with the quick change secondary metering rods, great carb i have one on my cutlass. water is bad for it, i clean them with varsol and store it dry. |Oh you live in london I lived there for 3 years. Live in kitchener now.

yeah it's an edelbrock 650cfm i didn't think water was the best idea but i thought that the cleaners might corrode the aluminum is there anything i can put in it besides gas to keep it good?

THey are best stored dry IMO. You could use mineral spirits, Not much stink comes off of that. Gas forms a varnish that will cause problems and youll have to clean it out again. Varnish will make the needle stick in the seat.

Ive never really used oven cleaner much. THose are a great carb, better than a holly IMO. Only problem with those is youll likely use more gas as the primarys are much bigger than the Qjet.

Canadian tire will have it. any hardware store, its a type of paint thinner.

yeah it already takes too much gas, has kinda high miles and is probably full of gunk from sitting. Thanks for the help I'll head over to crappy tire in the morning

Water is bad news. You really need to get a can of carb dip, completely disassemble the carb and soak it, then get a rebuild kit for it.

damn!! I was really hoping to not have to rebuild it, oh well I should have asked these questions before I tried to clean it. thanks guys I probably would have done some more damage without the help

Ok, just so I understand 100% what exactly does the water do to damage it? ruin the seals? or corrode the aluminum? or both?

It trashes the aluminum. I was given one of these carbs that was left out in the rain for months, and it's not pretty.
