Synthetic Oil
Checkig my Oil today, and I was a quart low.
Went to the Gas Station and saw that they had Chevron "Synth" 10-40wt. I bought some Penzoil, but that got me to thinking....... My Truck is due for an oil change. Would it hurt to have it changed over to Synthetic oil next time? The engine is a 94 350 out of a Sierra Pickup. Nothing special, but just wanting to keep it around until I put the Stroker in this Summer. I remember MANY YEARS AGO, when you changed over to Synth oil, you had to slowly "introduce" it into your crankase. I'm assuming thats NOT the case anymore? Should I keep using the Penzoil/Castrol or change to Synth, (or am I just wasting my Money)?

Re: Synthetic Oil
No need to slowly introduce it, nor any of this BS about if you switch you cant go back to conventional. What you need to be worried about is the shape of your gaskets and seals. If you have a weep when you switch to syn it will more than likely turn into a leak. I would also be afraid if it is using oil already it might use more, no experience with the using oil part though. Good luck whatever you decide.

Re: Synthetic Oil
I agree, no need to flush or slowly introduce it. If you wish to just drain and fill, although I might get the motor real nice and warm and let it drain for a bit longer then normal before you switch. I switched my 99 5.3 over to synthetic last year, and love it. It does use a tad more but I have noticed the advantages. Engine runs smoother. I used royal purple, a bit spendy but worth it. I also put royal purple in my 2.5 ltr STI and with the turbo...I wasnt real happy with it, consumed it quite rapidly. I watched an episode of Trucks! not too long ago where they where testing the durability of synthetic oils, and they had one oil that was phenomenol. I'll try and track down the company name, it would def. be a product to consider. I'll edit when/if I find them.

Re: Synthetic Oil
drain the old, fill the new. All the hype of introducing slow and 99% of the other things youy've heard bad, is all BS.
However, if you are trying to get 6 months out of it, then I don't think oil matters much. |

Re: Synthetic Oil
i use synthetic in everything trannies rears engines wheel bearings etc
the reasonto slowly introduce it to the crankcase is so you dont make a mess spilling it when the funnel overflows

Re: Synthetic Oil
I think there are some "high mileage" synthetics that have special additives in them to help old seals from leaking. (I assume that is what the "high mileage formula is for)

Re: Synthetic Oil
Changed my 72 350 to synthetic last summer. I've had the truck
two or three years and have done nothing to the motor other than valve cover gaskets. No additional leaks or usage with the synthetic. Good luck, and just change over to the synthetic. |

Re: Synthetic Oil
Oil is what i do. I just met the main chemical analyst guy who worked for castrol 25 years. We had a huge seminar. He said that a big mistake people make is thinking there is a problem switching over from conv. and there is not. He now works for cross oils who make syn guard synthetic oils and conv oils. There oil is 100 percent got from here in the usa(texas) and refined. Long story short it will not cause a problem to switch. I have done it everyday for 14 years.
