Re: Anyone on this board near Flint,Mi

Here's a little Davison trivia. I opened up my first custom paint shop in Davison, MI. in the summer of '70. My uncle, Rodney Collins, was the former principal of Davison high school and had a '67 Chevy C10 pickup at the time. I've loved these trucks ever since.

See, I told you it was trivia.

More trivia:

I think Mr Collins was principal at Hill Elementary, which is where I remember him from, before moving to the High School.

He bore a strong resemblance to one of my cousins; so one time when I had a school friend over they asked "...why do you have a picture of Mr Collins on your TV?".

(lol)

John - do you remember my Dad or my family; we were sort of local "big wigs" in the racing and street scene. At that time we had a orange 69 GMC pickup. You might read the two links of stories and urban legends shown in my signature and see if any of that sounds familiar.

What was your shop called and where was it located?

Thanks -

K

Re: Anyone on this board near Flint,Mi

I WORKED AT GM TRUCK & BUS AT VAN SLYKE & ATHERTON IN THE EARLY EIGHTIES MAKING BLAZERS, SUBERBANS & PICKUPS. AHHHH THOSE WERE THE DAY.... MAKING 3 TIMES WHAT I SHOULD HAVE & WORKING ONE TWENTIETH AS HARD AS COULD. NO WONDER SUBERBANS WERE $34,000 THEN & G.M. FINALLY HAD TO DECLARE BANKRUPTSY. & I WAS SKILLED TRADES.... ONE OF THE HARDER WORKING PEOPLE. THERE WERE SEVERAL PEOPLE, OR COUPLES WORKING ON THE ASSY. LINE MAKING A COMBINED INCOME OF OVER $80,000 ON THE LINE & MAKING WAY TO MUCH TO EVEN CONSIDER GOING BACK TO SCHOOL P/T TO TRY TO BETTER THEIR LIFE STYLE, AFTER ALL... THEY WERE ONLY MAKING $3 OR $4 AN HOUR LESS THAN ME & I HAD TO GO TO SCHOOL AT A COMUNITY COLLAGE FOR FIVE YEARS. I QUIT IN 86 (I GOTTA BE THE ONLY PERSON IN HISTORY TO QUIT GM) TO OPEN MY OWN SHOP SO I COULD MAKE LESS MONEY & WORK HARDER. NO WONDER HALF THE PEOPLE IN MICH. ARE UNEMPLOYED. MY 24 YR. OLD BOY STILL LIVES IN HOWELL MICH. & WORKS TWO JOBS. JOHN (& HE COMES DOWN OFF THE SOAPBOX0

John - that's exactly when I was at the truck plant. From '79 to '86 or so.

Perhaps we actually ran into each other during that time.

SMALL WORD KEITH... I WAS A SECOND SHIFT LAYOUT INSPECTOR. I WAS THE ONLY LAYOUT GUY ON 2ND. I WORKED MOSTLY ON LINE 1 BUT SOMETIMES ON LINE 2. IF YOU EVER REMEMBER SEEING A GUY PUSHING A CAB ON A WAIST HIGH CART, HALF THE TIME MARKED ALL OVER WITH BLUE LAYOUT DIE & LOTS OF SCRIBED LINES... THAT WAS ME. JOHN

Keith,

There must be two Rodney Collins, or Rodney and a Rod Collins. My uncle was principal from around '47 to '69. The field at the high school was named after him.

My shop, Crazy John Custom Paint was in a shed behind my uncle's garage on 2nd st. The days of acrylic lacquer, I shot cars and motorcycle parts on a hosed down driveway, and then learned how to get good at rubbing them out.

I grew up in So Cal, and went to Michigan for the summers. '57. '62, '66, and then spent almost a year in '70. I don't remember your dad or family from living in Davison, but I read every word of your posts and remember the Royal Pontaic days big time from being a drag racing fan and reading the magazines.

Thanks,

John

Re: Anyone on this board near Flint,Mi

John Gilbert -

I made a mistake. My principal was Ronald Wright (I had to call my mom and ask her)

But - I do remember Mr Collins. In fact, he used to live in our neighborhood. We still refer to the house on the corner as "Collins' old house". We made the mistake one time of mentioning to a new neighbor: "oh, you live in Collins' house".

He said "no, I live in my house".

I think he was also involved in building Collingwood, the apartment complex there on M15 in town.

So - Is this the same Collins that had a daughter named Colleen, which would make her your cousin?
