Engine Identification
Here's my 70' C-10 that used to belong to my dad. It was his farm truck for almost 20 years. He was told when he bought it that the original 350 was replaced with a 327 from a Camaro (around 68' or 69'). I'm trying to figure out just what block I have but can't make out any numbers on the block. I'm thinking about moving the A/C brackets so I can access the area to lightly sand. Hopefully I can make out the numbers that way. Any suggestions would be appreciated because I'd really like to know what I have here. Even if it is a 327, it appears they reused the intake from the 350?

Re: Engine Identification
My guess is a 307, all 350 and 327 CID had the 4 BBL Quadrajet
yours has a 2 BBL |

Re: Engine Identification
in the middle of your second picture you will see a flat pad in front of the valve cover. thats where your numbers will be. take a small wire brush to it. then wipe on some whiteout ,white paint, or chalk. then wipe again. the paint will stay in the stamp marks and make it easy to read.

Re: Engine Identification
Not true, there were alot of 327's with 2bbls, ive got three of them myself. And even some lower power 350's had 2bbls.

Re: Engine Identification
Alot of things going on here not helping matters. As far as i know, a 2bbl could be had on any small block. Not sure how you think they used the intake from the 350? Pretty hard to tell most small blocks by appearance. There is a casting number and date code above where the bell housing mounts. (below the dist on the drivers side i think.) Get that 7 digit number, then see if there is a code below the A/C where you took the pic. That will help narrow it down. If there is no engine listed inside the glove box, maybe it is the original 307? Good luck

as the previous said, look straight down from the driver's valve cover in front of the bellhousing.

Re: Engine Identification
I know that you could have special ordered anything.
I remember reading in one of my books that a Fleet Special Order was available if you ordered more than one Truck. The Medum Duty Trucks, C/40, C/50 & C/60 used a 2BBL, and 4BBL. The Vans used a 2BBL. But all of the Light Duty Trucks with a, 283, 327, 350, 396, or 402 RPO engine had a 4BBL from what I find and is all I find in my GM literature. I,m not fighting with anyone, but I do like a healthy discusion, this is how we all learn, at the end maybe I will be saying you were right and I was wrong, or that, Steve knows all and tells all dkb1970 check the #s and let us know Last edited by burb71; 02-13-2010 at 12:59 PM. |

Re: Engine Identification
Just to mix it up a little more, i am pretty sure the 396 could be had with a 2bbl in the pickups.

Re: Engine Identification
The 307 came with 2bbl never seen one with 4bbl unless changed- Most 350's came with 4bbl but could be had with a 2bbl, I seen two that were unmolested factory trucks with this in place. The 396/400/402 could also be had with a 2bbl but it was rare as well, just like a three speed behind the bb it was available but was rare.

Re: Engine Identification
I thought the 327 motors didn't have mounting holes in the front face of the heads but on the sides of the heads. Unless somebody swapped on later heads. But I have a tendancy to be wrong a lot.... well thats what my wife says.

Re: Engine Identification
Thanks for all of the comments guys. I'll try to answer a few of the questions raised.
It's my understanding the 327's had the heater hose tying into the water pump instead of the intake. I believe the intakes are interchangeable between most of the small blocks so they PO might have have kept the old one. I definately buff off that pad shown in my second picture to see if the number shows. That's why I took the picture to show where I was looking. Thanks again for all of the imput. I'll post back when I have more news. Dennis |
