Help with Collector bolts loosening - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Can anyone recommend a solution for my situation. I am running a ball type collector system without a gasket. The bolts seem to loosen over time and develop leaks. I use lock washers and lock nuts which resist loosening because of the thread pattern. Does anyone know of anything else to use? High temp thread lock? The bolts are 2 inches long so I can't use the bolts with the self locking mechanism because they only come in 1 inch.

had a similar issue with the 57 collectors. i went to the muffler shop and they just retightened and spot welded the nut to the bolt. never loosened again.

use high temp forma gasket like a thread lock

use 2 nuts jammed together. i had the same problem until i double nutted mine. no more leaks.

longer bolts with springs in between the flange and bolts seem to work pretty good. I have had a couple sets of ball flanged header to exhaust connections and that has worked form me. Seems like a honda I had was like that from the factory, and kinda mimicked that setup. like this

Have you tried using teflon tape on the bolt threads? I use it on my header flange bolts and I do not have any issues with the bolts coming loose.

High temp locknuts will take care of your issue. They are steel and do not have nylon insert like typical lock nuts. Instead they are crimped slightly when manufactured to make them self locking. Every jet engine out there uses them and they see very high temperatures and obviously don't loosen up in use.

STAGE 8 LOCKING BOLTS. I'VE USED THEIR HEADER BOLTS & THEY ARE GREAT , & THEY SEEM TO MAKE EM FOR A BUNCH OF APPLICATIONS NOW.

"All metal" lock nuts are known as "prevailing torque nuts". There are a few different types available.
One style looks very much like a nylon insert type. It has the ring around the top, but it is "crimped" to interfere with the threads. Tightening this nut "stretches" the crimp, holding it in place.
Another use a "crushing" of the nut into somewhat of a triangle. This puts more pressure on the threads too.
Others use various forms of "distorted" threads.

The stock rocker arm nuts are a good example of these. You just have to be aware that most of them will lose their holding ability with repeated removal-reinstallation.
