Vague Electrical Question on a 64
I warned ya! haha
Alright - the PO did some interesting 'repairs' on the engine compartment wiring harnesses and I am in the process of rewiring it. Im having a hard time identifying function of one of the wires. I think it was for the factory 'amp' guage?? Its the Black/White Stripe (14 or 16awg) wire at the drivers side firewall bulkhead. It runs to the horn relay and is spliced in with the 12awg red. Am I right that it is the Amp Gauge wire? I am planning to use a later model alt with built in voltage reg, so I am eliminating the VR box near the horn relay and will also wire in a volt gauge instead of the AMp gauge, so if I am id'ing this black wire correctly, it can be eliminated. Right? thanks if anyone held in for that dissertation and actually understands what Im asking. Sean |

Re: Vague Electrical Question on a 64
If you go with an alternator that charges more than 37 amps hook a 10 guage wire directly to the battery , the stock system was only designed for 37 amps not 60 or 80 that most of the internal regulators make.

Re: Vague Electrical Question on a 64
thanks 62 - Im all good with that - Im actually rewiring majority of underhood to Mad Electricals 'New System' for GMC - it definitly takes this into consideration.
I just wanted to make sure I was identifying that black/white wire correctly - and for some reason I didnt have or misplaced that 'old chevy' diagram with my stuff from MAD - found with a google search after I posted. Last edited by blackmopar; 03-12-2010 at 05:40 PM. |

That black & white wire does go to the ammeter and by the looks of your "wiring diagram" you've got posted the wiring shown will work for stock equipment. The factory wiring landed the other wire to the "batt" terminal at the starter. Your diagram isn't clear where that termination is, but it is correct schematically. What ever you do don't connect that return wire to ground!!
Here's what I had to deal with after the P.O. realised that a 1/4-20 bolt has the same diameter as a fuse....... I kept the "fused" section of my old harness as a shop souvenir
