Talking I found a truck!! You guys got to check it out!!

Well as some of you know, I am in Texas working, and have been looking for an old truck down here.

So this morning I bought a local classified paper and was browsing through it. Well I see an ad for a '70 Chevy in good condition. They are asking $2400.

So I call them and set up an appointment. I am driving over thinking, well I am probobly going to find some old junker.

I pull up and its a C20 Camper unit. Wasn't really impressed with that. Anyway I have a look. This truck has NO RUST AT ALL! Not a bit...I'm not lying! Just a small 8" scrape in front fender, and the tailgate is a bit bent. The thing has 73,600 original miles on it.

I get looking, it has factory air condition ing! Now I'm getting giddy. I pop the hood, and what do you know. A big block.(402 w/T-400 trans) I get talking with the guy, (He has like 6 of these trucks) He bought it from some old farmer who never really used it. The truck is completely original from head to toe, numbers maching truck. Air needs recharging, but thats no biggy. The box floor is near new, usual small scrap markes in the paint, no dents. It has one of those factory toolboxes in the pass. lower box side too.

Only sad part, is the old guy hated the color and had it painted from the original green to white, inside and out. He also removed all the trim when he did this. Too bad. I crawled all over this truck, and under it. There are no rust spots in the body at all, even the body rubber bushing look not to bad. All electrical things work, and the emergency brake works! It doens't have the original radio either, this guy installed a cheap tape deck, but didn't cut the dash, so thats cool. The dash pad is wasted due to sitting in the sun all its life.

Anyway needless to say I bought it. Now I get to drive it back to Canada! Let the adventure begin!

i like the green better than white, i bet it was #503 code on glovebox door ?
was all original, but sounds like a score anyways ! 4.10 ratio shouldnt be too bad for it on the highways, is it dana60 or eaton ? leaf or coil ?

good luck !

Awsome. You oughta try to find a used tailgate while your there. There are a whole bunch of yards on the west side of Fortworth (I think the west side...been a while) I hear they ALWAYS have these trucks in there.
Congrats.

The rear has a leaf spring suspension. As for the type of rear, I am not sure. It has a 10 bolt cover, and is different than a regular 10 bolt chevy rear. I don't know 3/4ton diffs at all, and am not sure of the gear ratio. But I do know it spins like hell off the line on a dirt road!

As for the codes inside the glove box, the sticker is there, but was painted over when they painted the inside. I am going to carfully scrape the paint off.

Not sure if this is a big NO-NO, but I think I am going to swap it to 5 bolt 1/2 ton suspension, maybe eventually into a shortbox.

Thats an excellent buy, the motor and tranny are easily worth that. If your driving back with it make sure to bring back some rust free sheet metal and maybe even a short box bed. Let me know when you plan of heading home and I could get you to pick some parts up for me on the way. Sell some parts and that will help you pay for your trip home. Any pics yet??

Hey Bowtie, I think I will be heading home this coming long weekend hopefully.

I would love to be able to buy some more parts, but I'm tapped out now. Got to buy a few spare parts for the trip, as well as pay for all the damn gas this thing is going to guzzle! Only thing I would want is a short box, but that won't happen for a year for sure, so I'm in no hurry. As for the rest of the metal, its awesome.

I was thinking when the time comes to see if Scott's Supertrucks would want to buy the bed, then I could buy a new shortbed.

May have pics in the middle of next week.

Hey 71402BB, I know what you mean. It would be a shame to change the truck, but I have always had my heart set on a shortbox. The 402 is only a plus! But something this original in this good of shape will be hard to change.

You have the Dana 60 and it should have 3.54 gears(std w/bb engine) unless noted otherwise on the glove box. If it is tuned and running well you will get 10mpg. Load up on that cheap southern gasoline for the trip home. It might be worth finding a 100 gallon ag gas tank for in the box!

Heh heh heh, I'll keep it in mind Bowtie.

As far as the highway I will be traveling on, I am not sure yet. Got to buy a US map and have a look. Basically the shortest route from Midland/Odessa Tx, to Red Deer, Alberta. (hahah short trip & Texas really don't go well together....I don't think there IS a short way! Its going to be a long haul)
