Steering Column Mod

My steering column is in sad shape. The bones are good, but the column shifter and all associated guts are gone, just leaving a gaping hole in the right side. What I was thinking of doing, is shaving off the hinge points and filling in the hole. This would save me a lot of $$ and I could document it just in case nobody has tried it yet.

So, the question is, has anyone tried this one yet? Or am I treading on dangerous ground? Any pointers?

I did a writeup on this a couple of years ago but the thread is probably in the archives by now. I would say go ahead and document it if you have time. Mine worked out good.

You could also get a shift collar from a four speed truck and just replace yours with it.

That looks really good LockDoc! I like the idea of being able to say I did it myself instead of swapping the sleeves. I'm learning to do stuff, and this is good practice. I think I will give it a go, since it has been done and is possible.

I did the same thing to mine. (no, I did not document it)I know there are others around here who have done the same thing. I think it turned out pretty good.

I took my column appart and replaced the collar with one I had on a shelf and it worked great, I even took some 3" to 2" Chrome Exhaust Pipe and put around my column shaft all the way into the dash, created an aluminum locker ring at the top under the collar to hold everything in place correctly now my column is all chrome with my shifter on the console. is a very nice setup and cheaper then purchasing any chrome column. looks really well I will have to soon take some pictures if my camera was not broken I would do it today.

Chrome tailpipes on your steering column. Now that is getting to the heart of hot rodding. I like the idea. I may have to try that.

Wow this looks interesting...you have any pics you could share with us?

Here is the best picture I have at the moment but Its how my chrome column used with tail pipe, looks great in my book and you can not tell at all its tail pipe when finished. the only things still black on there is the cup behind the steering wheel and where the turn signal indicator lever but both these can be changed out with Chrome ones easily, I have not finished as of yet due to I am now in the process of a full restore jobber.
