Stereo install in 79

I did a quick search but did not find what I was looking for. I have a CD/Stereo head unit that I would like to install. Since the dash is designed for the old 'post' style radios, what is the best way to install a rectangular unit in the stock location? Are there kits available or does everyone just 'roll their own'? Any suggestions for cutting the panel ?

Thanks
Steve

alot of peolple just cut the dash to fit the stereo. There is not acual intal kit cause the hole is not large enough. iether that or you can mount it else were suck as the glove box or make a custom enclosure for it under the dash. Just make sure the hole it just a hair bigger than the actual cd player so you can fit the battle cage in there. ( the metal cage that holds the cd player)

Re: Stereo install in 79

I figured I would have to cut the dash. I just wanted to see if anyone had any tips-n-tricks I could follow before I 'mangled' it on my own. I have to find a radio install kit with a 'battle cage'. I pulled the radio out of a Corolla that I'm selling (put the stock radio back in) but it does not have the cage.

Is it better to get the panel from someplace like Crutchfield or can you cut the bezel also?
