How bad is This Screw-Up?
I removed the pinion yoke without indexing/marking the nut,shaft and yoke orientation.:redface: What are the negatives involved in this "oversight"? Im installing a posi axle and wanted to replace all the seals. I knew better, but I had the thing off before my brain kicked in. Thanks guys!

No problem. Clean the treads good & put some thread locker on the nut. Snug it down & tighten it a little at a time till you can feel a slight drag when turning the yoke back & forth. There should be no free play up & down on the yoke.

Did you just remove the drive shaft from from the pinion yoke, or the the pinion shaft from the diff housing, and pull it from the ring gear.
If it just the drive shaft, no problems no ballancing there. If it was the pinion shaft out of the housing from the ring gear, do as Wrenchbender says. You may want to install new crush bushing though.

sometimes the shaft is balanced to the yoke, rare but possible. if it vibrates just flip it 1/2 turn and go.
there is no way to balance the yoke to the pinion. no reason to be concerned unless you get the pinion nut loose or too tight. IIRC 15-25 inlbs. of force should be required to rotate the pinion yoke with axles removed. a little more with axles installed. |
