Primer to avoid top coat problems?

To all of you seasoned restorers, what are the best primers (or a good way to pick a primer) to ensure compatibility with the possible top coat/clear coats? e.g. is there any compatibility issues with aftermarket parts that come primed, or with using a Dupont primer if you later wanted to use a PPG top coat, vice versa, etc.?

Thanks.

Mark

(We'll probably do the priming ourselves...haven't decided on the top coat yet and my do that with a pro or experienced amateur shop).

Re: Primer to avoid top coat problems?

Two important points in painting old vehicles:
- Do some type of rust stabilization with the first coat, lie a self-etching primer
- Cover the primer with a sealer coat that will keep the solvents in the color coats from loosening the primer coat. This sealer is usually sprayed on right before the first color coat. Note the sealer coat is usually given a tack-rag pass once set.

Re: Primer to avoid top coat problems?

Welcome! You should be OK with what you've got planned.
The E-coat primer on aftermarket parts shoud be sanded and reprimed, IMO.
It's not a good idea to use, say, brand X activator in brand Y primer.
