Re: how does a 4 speed run behind a 250

don't know why it would really matter if it was a 3 or 4 speed, the top gear is going to be 1:1 either way. Just no stupid column shifter.

Re: how does a 4 speed run behind a 250

my 69 has 250/4spd and 4.11 diff gears and i drive it to work everyday and i'm happy with it.never use first gear and will probably change the diff gears soon to keep the revs down abit.did a 450 mile trip in it a few weekends ago and found the petrol mileage was similar to the same trip in my 69 350/2spd auto pontiac lemans convert.have decided to keep the truck i6 cause everybody else over here puts a v8 in them and this truck is cool as it is.have a clifford inlet manifold and 350 holley to put on it and will make my own headers and dual exhaust.

Re: how does a 4 speed run behind a 250

Is it a bulldog 4spd or a regukar 4spd? In a bulldog, 2nd,3rd,and 4th are the same ratios as 1st,2nd and 3rd in a 3spd. 1st gear is just very low for pulling and mostly used for a really slow moving speed for farm use.

If it's a regular 4spd, like a Muncie or Saginaw, I would say to get it. The final drive gear is still 1:1 like the 3spd, but with closer gear splits.

Inline 6s are inherently balanced. It is probably the best cylinder arrangement you can have in an engine. It makes plenty of power, if that is your concern. I love inline 6s, I am collecting a car of each type, I have a 292 chevy, 4.0 jeep, I need toyota, a bmw and a ford.

You're gonna need a high hump for a truck 4 speed.

Re: how does a 4 speed run behind a 250

If you're gonna have a 6, I think a 4 speed is the only way to go. I had a 69 4x4 once with a 292 4spd. I think the 6 needs all the help it can get. Mine got crappy milage and NO power to boot. I can't imagine anyone wanting a 6 but to each his own. No offense to all the 6 lovers out there!!

Re: how does a 4 speed run behind a 250

I have to jump in here...I'm running a 292 4bbl with a WC T5 and love it. Plenty of torque, good gear ratios, and reasonable mileage for the weight of the truck. I don't agree that the I6's have "no power", I have all the power I need for the truck's intended purpose.

Re: how does a 4 speed run behind a 250

We've had a couple and they're great.

Incidently, our '69 GMC would routinely outrun a fella at work who had a V8 truck: 292 L6 punched to 305, true duals, 3x2 Rochesters with a Pontiac progressive linkage, Hurst shifted 3.11 low gear Saginaw 4 speed with 3.73 gears...

Just about every time he'd make a tweak, we'd make a comparable change and run 'em off. He never did beat us across the intersection - which frustrated him to no end cause he knew ours was a 6.

I have a 250 with a Richmond 5-speed behind it and another truck with a 292 and SM420 4-speed. I like 'em.

Re: how does a 4 speed run behind a 250

I run the 250 with the four on the floor. Check my build thread for more info, I would bet money it out runs most 350's out there. I love it!

Re: how does a 4 speed run behind a 250

My old '67 swb has a stock 4 speed behind a '70 i-6.

It is not running great, carb problem I think, but it will make the rear tires spin it I want when taking off. I am not sure of the rear end gearing though since I have never taken the cover off and checked, probably 3.73.

Re: how does a 4 speed run behind a 250

Don't forget the 3 speed overdrives! The NP833 (MY6 code) from the 80's is a direct replacement for the Saginaw 3 speed. You get a 3.09 first gear and 0.76 overdrive (fourth). Best move I've done with mine.

You will need to cut a hole for the shifter of course.

Good Luck.
