Wheel bearing tutorial?

My brother and I are trying to find a tutorial in case we need to replace the wheel bearings. I have an 1969 with the original drum brakes.

Can anyone point me to the resources?

Re: Wheel bearing tutorial?

factory service manual// sold at pretty cheap prices by most board vendors

you can also check local library for a one size fits all service manual like chiltons, motors, haynes etc

Re: Wheel bearing tutorial?

pretty simple and straight forward, remove the castle nut lock pin, remove the castle nut, slide the drum off, pull the bearings. remove them, buy new ones, buy wheel bearing grease, pack the bearings with grease by working it in there with your hands, then reinstall opposite of how you removed it.

Re: Wheel bearing tutorial?

Get the Chassis Service Manual. There is a specified torque on the locknut to set bearing preload when you put it back together.

Don't suppose anyone knows what the torque is without me having to find the chassis service manual?

Re: Wheel bearing tutorial?

Is the truck a 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton?

my dad, who comes from a long line of mechanics, told me to turn the rotor(or drum) and tighten the castle-nut until you feel sligt drag on the rotor. it seems to work pretty good
