steering column

Can someone school me on what length of steering column is best. I have a small block v8 with Comaro headers and a mustang 2 IFS front end with a power steering rack in a 56 cab. I found a good deal on a 30" and don't know if that would be to short But if I go to long it may cause a problem running the shift linkage to the trans because of the headers.

The 82 eldo column in my build thread is about 32" if I remember, but it telescopes out about 3".

Wow; That long? so your columns come down to the frame rail? Are you all running headers? How did you run your shift linkage?

Somewhere between 30 and 36 I think is OK as long as you use an appropriate length steering shaft. I ended up using a 32" GM tilt column with the stock aluminum steering shaft for my 96 Vette rack and pinion. The trick was that my column drop will clamp anywhere on the column. I sat on a milk crate and tested the feel of the wheel placement and it seems OK but I still need to put in the seats. Some people have longer arms than others, too.

I just asked Iditit and Flaming River for suggested column length for my 56 1/2 ton body on 80 1/2 ton frame. I was told by one, I think Flaming River, to get 30 to 32 inch length for a tilt. I am going to confirm with broom handle and pie plate - with original bench seat in! I also heard that Ididit may have lifetime warranty on column. Can anybody confirm that warranty as I am currently in the hunt? I think I saw that in one of our discussion threads.

I'd have to add put the wheel where it feels right and go from there with your column.
One of the things that isn't right about my 48 is that the wheel is way too high and uncomfortable. I don't have an excuse for never taking the time to fix the situation but when a guys is building a truck one of the things that needs to be considered is driver comfort. It makes those longer trips in the truck a lot more pleasant and fun.
