Question 71 chevy stering problems..please help

i have a 71 chevy shortie 4wd it has a 3inch skyjacker lift and a 95 350vortec with a matching 700r4 everytime i turn the wheel 3/4 or more my sterrin squeals like a dead pig not to great when your trying to pic up chicks...any suggestions as why or how i can remedy this would be freakin awsome ..thnx

Check the belt for wear and tension? Does it do it when parked and you turn the wheel or just while driving?

If you hear it while parked you can use a short piece of garden hose (I use a 3ft section) as an aid to isolate the noise.

Also, belts sometimes look good but still slip. Could even be a defective p.s. pump.

Sounds like a loose, missaligned, or warn out belt to me also. Its a possibility that the belt may also be too narrow and could be slipping because it can't gain enough traction on the pullies under a load. Shut off the motor and check the powersteering belt for play. Also inspect it for cracks, that the two pullies are directly in line with each other, and that the top of the belt is level with the top of the pullies. WES

it does it while moving even if its just crawling,i checked the belts there tight and mostly new...my p.s. pulley is slightly off centered from the crank pulley and is actually kinda crooked,huh...well aint that about a b**** thanks guys for youre help!!!! ima throw on some correct fittin belts and a new pump when i get stateside...again thnx for the help!
